Student Questions (Volumes 1-10) - Laurel A. Rockefeller
Boudicca, Britain’s Queen of the Iceni
Prologue
The Dobunni were a Celtic people originally from modern day Spain and driven northward to what is now central England. What happened in the first century before the Common Era that would prompt the Dobunni’s migration to Britain?
The Romans don’t like the peoples they find in Britain. Name some of the differences between the Romans and the peoples of Britain.
Moira and Keita are clearly cooking something. If you had to guess, what are they making?
Chapter One
Boudicca and Prasutagus approach the Romans from very different points of view. What specific experiences in each of their lives most intensely shape how each looks at the Romans and responds to current events?
Boudicca cautions Prasutagus against making bargains with Romans. Why? What happened during earlier invasions of Britain and Gaul to make Boudicca distrust Romans?
How does Prasutagus respond to the abuse Boudicca suffered at Roman hands? What seems to motivate his actions?
Chapter Two
Prasutagus seems immediately enamored by Boudicca. What motivates him to offer Boudicca marriage so soon after they meet? What reasons might Boudicca have to accept him?
Boudicca and Prasutagus’ wedding is decidedly different from the Greco-Roman customs that are still part of weddings today. What customs do you expect in a wedding ceremony that are decidedly absent in their wedding and reception? What do they do at their wedding and reception that we still do today?
Chapter Three
Describe the education Boudicca provides her daughters Alys and Morgan. What does Boudicca do to make sure they know and understand their heritage?
Describe Prasutagus’ relationships with his daughters and with Boudicca. Is this a loving family? Does Prasutagus regret marrying Boudicca or is he happy with the way things turned out?
The relationship between Prasutagus and the Roman governor starts out warm and friendly but quickly chills. Why?
What bargain does Prasutagus make with Rome? Does he leave the meeting with Suetonius Paullinus happy with the deal he just made? Why/why not?
What are Alys and Morgan’s reaction to the deal their father made? Do they trust the Romans? Did they ever trust the Romans? Why/why not?
Chapter Four
Boudicca goes to a forest shrine to pray for guidance. Does praying alleviate her worries about the future or confirm her foreboding?
What is the Roman response to Prasutagus’ death? Do they keep the bargain he made—or break the treaty?
Archaeology tells us that the Iceni were one of the most religious of the eastern tribes. What role does religion play in Boudicca’s life and in her response to the Roman attacks on her people?
What acts of violence do the Romans levy against the Iceni defenders, against Alys and Morgan, and against Boudicca personally? Why? What do the Romans have to gain by behaving like this?
Does the violence against the Iceni and against Boudicca and her daughters succeed in pacifying them? What is Boudicca’s response to these atrocities?
What does Boudicca do to demonstrate her wisdom
