Cargo Shorts
Fabric and Notions Requirements
* Woven fabrics like quilting cottons, twill, linen, muslin, or lightweight corduroy: About ¼ yard or small scraps big enough for the pattern pieces
* 4 strips of ¼˝-wide ribbon or cording, 8˝ long
* 4˝ of ½˝-wide elastic
* 2 squares ⅜˝ × ⅜˝ of sewable hook-and-loop fastener
* 3 decorative buttons
Cut
* Pattern piece A (shorts front): Cut 2 (1 and 1 reversed).
* Pattern piece B (shorts back): Cut 2 (1 and 1 reversed).
* Pattern piece C (shorts front waistband): Cut 1.
* Pattern piece D (shorts back waistband): Cut 1.
* Pattern piece E (casing): Cut 2.
* Pattern piece F (pocket): Cut 4.
* Pattern piece G (pocket flap): Cut 4.
Sewing Instructions

1. Place a shorts front (pattern piece A) and a shorts back (pattern piece B), right sides together, and pin along the side edge. Stitch with a ¼˝ seam allowance and finish with a serger or zigzag stitch (Figure A). Press seam toward back and topstitch ˝ from the seam. Repeat for remaining front and back pieces.
2. Create 2 buttonholes ¼˝ tall at each side where indicated on the pattern pieces (Figure B).
3. Place a casing (pattern piece E) over the bottom edge of the shorts, right sides together, and pin along the bottom raw edges. Stitch with a ¼˝ seam allowance (Figure C). Press casing toward wrong side of shorts. Finish the loose edge of the casing with a serger or zigzag stitch if desired. Stitch along the right side of the shorts ⅝˝ up from the finished edge (Figure D). Repeat for other half of the shorts.
