About this ebook

Updated fourth edition. Pages 128. Illustrated with 30 freely reproducible mini-posters

In January 2020, China declared the presence of a new contagious and potentially deadly coronavirus. After a month, the epidemic has already taken on exceptional dimensions. There are over a thousand deaths. The outbreak has spread to over fifty countries outside of China. Only the knowledge of the danger can help to overcome it, therefore there is a great need for clear information.

Often, however, we receive fragmented information, seasoned with technical terminologies or distorted by the disinformers who infest the web.

This book was written to be understood. The author is an expert communicator in the field of scientific subjects. He clearly presents a large amount of advice and recommendations, first of all those suggested by the major international authorities including the WHO (World Health Organization) and the ECDC (European Center for Disease Pre-vention and Control).

These precautions and recommendations can be applied at home, in the workplace or on the go. They allow you to protect yourself and others in every situation.

The book clearly answers many doubts. These include the recognition of symptoms, the usefulness of the face mask, the use of antibiotics, relationships with food, goods and pets.

The book contains a comprehensive discussion on coronavirus. In addition, the book explains how this infection originated, and how it developed from the Chinese city of Wuhan.

A chapter is dedicated to all the delays of the Chinese government and to all the conspiracy interpretations that accompany the birth of this epidemic. In the final part of the book, the author comments on the future development of this infection, which could become a global pandemic. In addition to causing tens of thousands of deaths, this coronavirus could generate economic depression with unimaginable outcomes.

Important updates as of April 3, 2020

In the first edition this book contained some opinions of the scientific community. These opinions have changed based on the experience gained day by day. This is because Covid-19 is an unknown virus.

I find it useful to present the most important updates at the beginning of the book.

    Contagion through contact with objects.

The common opinion in February was as follows: the virus can only be transmitted through contacts through people. In March a study conducted by researchers from the University Medicine Greifswald (Germany) was published in the specialized journal Journal of Hospital Infection. The study concludes that the new coronavirus could survive up to nine days on inanimate surfaces at room temperature.

During the same period, a news item appeared in the newspapers. The Chinese government has prepared a national disinfection plan for banknotes circulating in China. If China deems it useful to disinfect money, the virus can obviously also circulate on paper and metal.

Today we are confident that viruses can remain active for a long time after exiting an attacked organism.

Therefore, it is important to clean the surface of the objects around us. It is essential to clean the objects we touch with our hands. For example, clean the handles of the supermarket trolleys, the door handles, the handrails of the stairs.

The virus can be easily eliminated from the surface of objects. To do this, use the disinfectant wipes. You can also use common disinfectants such as alcohol, hydrogen peroxide or bleach.

    Contagion from asymptomatic people

The common opinion in February was as follows: the virus can only be transmitted through contacts with people with symptoms of flu disease. The most obvious symptoms are coughing, sneezing and fever.

Today we know that the infection can also be transmitted by people who do not show the symptoms of the disease. These are people who have no cough or fever, so they look healthy. These people are called asymptomatic. However, these people can be contaminated with the virus. The virus may be present in the incubation phase.

The New England Journal of Medicine has published a Chinese study. According to this study, the amount of coronavirus present in the nose and throat of asymptomatic people can reach high levels. Consequently, the study confirms that an asymptomatic person can transmit the infection.

Asymptomatic people have a lower viral load than sick people. However, asymptomatics are responsible for 79% of the infections in China. This is because people with flu symptoms stay at home, while asymptomatic people travel more frequently.

The use of the face mask

In February the prevailing opinion was this:

    1) Sick people must use face masks to prevent their breath from infecting healthy people.

    2) Healthy people don't need a face mask.

In March a new awareness was born:

    1) Asymptomatic people can be contagious.

    2) It is preferable for everyone to wear a mask, so as not to unconsciously infect others.

In April the trend is to make the face mask mandatory for everyone.
