My interest in herbs and natural healing began years ago. I had already used some herbs with great success but still didn't think there was much beyond orthodox medicine when it came to illness and healing. Then I attended a weekend seminar based on the book, "The Medical Mafia" written by a French Canadian doctor. It was an expose of who really controls medicine in the West, and what I learned shocked me and I never looked at regular medicine or allopathic doctors the same again. I began to ponder what previous generations used for illness before "modern medicine" came along. I also began taking herbal courses to expand my knowledge and use herbs for myself and my pets. When I started to hear about how different government agencies were actively suppressing very effective herbs and making them illegal, I couldn't understand why. Why would something natural, that worked and was relatively safe be made illegal, and the pharmaceuticals, with potentially horrible and sometimes lethal side effects, be mostly left alone? I learned that treating illness is a business and a very profitable one at that. Herbs and anything natural cannot be patented and are therefore competition and a threat to the very powerful pharmaceutical industry, which can patent their synthetic drugs and then charge exorbitant prices for them. I also realized that not many people were aware of this.I love books, especially old, out-of-print, unique books. Over the years I went to many antique stores, second-hand book stores, and garage sales to collect them and I found a few very old & crumbling herbal remedy books. I put them away safely, afraid they would completely fall apart if I opened them too much and then forgot about them. I rediscovered them years later when going through some boxes I had packed away. Then I started to go through them and realized what a goldmine of information they contained and that there was much-hidden knowledge in these old herbal books. As I read them, I learned the battle between natural medicine and allopathic medicine is not new and was very prevalent in the 18th and 19th centuries. There seemed to be this constant battle between these two schools of thought on what causes disease and how to go about treating illness. As I went through the books I was shocked at how many amazing herbal remedies and kitchen cures were in them. Despite some ingredients being very dated and not in use today because we know better, there was still lots of great information that's relevant today. I didn't want these amazing old herbal remedies to be lost; left in old crumbling books where no one can find them and forgotten forever. So I scanned the books to read them without them falling apart, and went through them. I took out the best old herbal recipes and kitchen cures; as well as some of the strange ones and I combined that with relevant information from today and put them together into a book series. This is the first book of that series filled with these long-lost herbal secrets, Native herbal medicine, and kitchen cures. They are taken from a time era when people didn't run to the doctor regularly like today but helped each other out by sharing their remedies that had been passed down for generations; therefore it includes many old family herbal treasures as well as personal healing testimonials from the people of the time. Vintage Herbal & Home Remedies Collection is a book series on ancient medicine, herbal remedies, and forgotten kitchen cures.I hope you enjoy book 1, Long Lost Herbal Remedies & Kitchen Cures. Please check back later for the second book in the series Long Lost Cold & Flu Remedies, coming soon.Thank you!C. A. Buchanan

INTRODUCTION
Have you ever wondered what your great, great, Grandparents and their forefathers used for medicine? How did people stay healthy? What did they do when they were sick and what was in the medicine cabinet? Obviously not a bottle of antibiotics or Tylenol that we take for granted today. So, what did people do when they were sick with the flu or had a more serious illness? These are questions we often don’t think about or ask.
In this day and age of the glorification of pharmaceutical drugs, we have been conditioned as a society to believe that we cannot survive without modern medicine. This has been programmed into most people since childhood with advertising and the daily influence that large pharmaceutical companies have on the lives and minds of the general population through the media and elsewhere. Considering that prescription drugs are a relatively new addition to humanity’s evolution, there must have been a vast wealth of healing knowledge that has gotten us this far.
Although many people used allopathic medicine in the 19th century, many did not trust the methods of regular allopathic doctors, which included bloodletting, leeches, mercury, lead, and many other barbaric treatments. ¹ The herbalist, Native healers, and Eclectic doctors of the time used a different approach than the orthodox doctors, mostly relying on food, herbs, homeopathy, and anything that would bring the body back into balance. They were much like today’s naturopaths and herbalists. Some of their methods were questionable by today’s standards and there were also snake oil salesmen peddling magic potions. However, there were also skilled herbalists, Native herbal medicine, Grandmother’s home remedies, and kitchen cures that were used regularly. Their methods were generally much safer than what the allopathic or regular orthodox doctors were using at the time.
Our ancestors had a wealth of healing knowledge that was passed down through many generations. In today’s fast-paced world with modern medical technology it is easy to lose sight of the simple healing methods that they used; cures that were used for thousands of years and were often straight from the garden or kitchen pantry.
This book is a compilation of medicinal herbal recipes and home remedies that were used for medicine and healing before today’s modern medicine came along; sourced directly from old herbal books, catalogues, recipe books, newspaper clippings and magazines dating back to the mid-1800’s. It also includes treasured recipes passed down through the generations and personal cures testimonials from people long gone, as well as advice on how to use herbs.
Today pharmaceutical corporations & the F.D.A. control so much of what we call health care and through their influence any claim of a cure
is banned in natural health books today as only pharmaceutical drugs, approved by the FDA, can claim a cure.² Many of the recipes here are taken from literary works and personal testimonials well over 100 years old and before the FDA existed, therefore claims of cures appear several times. Take a walk back in time and learn what was commonly used for medicine; nature’s amazing healers, the herbal remedies, and kitchen cures used by our ancestors.
"Why Use Poisonous Drugs
When nature in her wisdom and beneficence has provided, in her great vegetable laboratory, the forest, a cure for most of the ills of man. Work and study have perfected the compounding of these botanical medicine and we herewith place them at your disposal." 1879
How To Take Medicine
One level teaspoonful of any powdered herb mentioned in this book may be steeped in a cup of hot water on the back of stove for 30 minutes. The water should not boil but must be kept near the boiling point for 30 minutes. Then strain and sweeten with honey whenever possible. Drink all during the day, cold, except when otherwise stated. Alternatively, from 6 – 12 tsp of any of powdered herbs herein mentioned may be steeped in a pint of water for 30 minutes; strain; add a cupful of whiskey or best brandy. Dose-Two tablespoonful’s two to four times a day. These proportions may be varied to suit your constitution. Some may require double strength.
The strength of a medicine may be judged by its taste. Strong medicine is never good. It is better to take a large cupful of a weak tea than a small dose of strong tea. Therefore, if a medicine appears strong to the taste be sure to dilute it with water before taking.
All of the teas in this book should be taken cold, except when otherwise stated.
One person wrote he spent thousands of dollars on doctors and patent medicines without relief and sent us 25c to give our herbs a trial. What do you think of him? There is a reason to be shy of doctors and their drugs, but there is no good reason why a person should not try one or a dozen different kinds of nature’s pure herbs in an endeavor to find a cure of serious disease. You cannot be cheap when your health is at stake. Health is the most precious thing you have.
Do not expect a 25c box of herbs to CURE a thousand-dollar disease.
Today that would read more like Do not expect a $25.00 box of herbs to cure a million-dollar disease.
