      Introduction

      Several years ago, I had a dream. A voice was telling me that every weed has a season in which it’s vulnerable and can be effectively dealt with. The voice said not to waste time and effort on the wrong weeds for the season. I thought that was interesting and seemed wise, but I wasn’t sure how to recognize which season was for what weed or how to apply what I learned in practical terms. I promptly forgot about the dream and walked right into learning about the meanings behind the Jewish months. A friend mailed me some info on the month we were in, and I began to see the possibilities for tapping into each season on a deeper level. I developed a program in a matter of weeks and have been refining it over the last few years. Later, I looked back at my dream journal and realized that I had been walking out my dream.

      When we follow the schedule God laid out in the stars, freedom in certain areas comes more easily as we take advantage of specific blessings. God wants to bring forth specific things in our lives every month that will propel us forward into our destiny.

      Each of the following come together to give us strategy throughout the year: the explanations behind each Hebrew month, the original meaning of the corresponding constellations, the tribes that correlate to each, and the gates of Jerusalem. When we align all these together, blessings, areas of healing, potential pitfalls, and warfare are revealed. 

      We begin in the month of Nisan, which starts in March or April. The first few months follow the story of the exodus and the journey to the promised land. It’s a time of breaking out of bondage and moving into all God has for us. We can repeat this cycle year after year because we always have areas of our lives where we are not living in our full potential. In some cases, we miss a crucial step and have to go round the mountain again; in other cases, it simply wasn’t time for the exact freedom we had in mind, but we became untangled in other areas. We also get ourselves into new situations and then have to get out. Every Nisan is a fresh start, but you can join during any month of the year.

      The Hebrew Calendar

      It’s a bit of a challenge to follow the Hebrew calendar for those of us who are accustomed to the standard Gregorian calendar. The Hebrew months seem to start all over the place when compared with the Gregorian months. Holidays seem to move, and occasionally, the Hebrew calendar has a thirteen-month year. The Hebrew calendar employs three different astronomical occurrences: the rotation of the earth around the sun, the rotation of the earth on its axis, and the rotation of the moon around the earth. Our Gregorian calendar doesn’t follow any of these, and dates are set arbitrarily.

      Each month begins on a new moon, the first visible crescent in the sky. A Jewish day begins at sundown before what we would consider a day, so if a new moon begins on the fourth of a Gregorian month, the day would actually start at sundown on the third.

      Lunar calendars drift slightly over time. If each month is twenty-nine or thirty days, then the year is eleven days shorter than it should be. That doesn’t seem like a problem until you have too many short years back-to-back, and then the feast days are out of whack with harvest times (important in ancient times), and the whole schedule goes way off track.

      In ancient times, the Sanhedrin noticed this by looking at the development of the crops, livestock, and weather, and if it didn’t look like spring, they had an additional Adar. Now it’s corrected by having an extra Adar every two or three years. Hebrew leap years follow a Metonic cycle, which means that leap years occur seven times within a nineteen-year period. Years 3, 6, 8, 11, 14, 17, and 19 have an additional Adar.

      The bigger picture is why we would want to follow these seasons. The cyclical patterns of time carry imprints of the past for good or bad. If you’ve ever noticed that a certain time of year is always difficult for you, you’ve experienced this. But the victories, the feasts, the times that we know God is going to meet with us on a certain topic—those we milk for all they’re worth. The more we take advantage of those patterns, the stronger and more significant they become. On specific negative dates in Jewish history, such as the 9th of Av, many bad things have happened. We pull in the opposite direction of those so that we don’t add strength and agreement to those outcomes.

      While we recognize the cyclical patterns, time is linear too. We are always progressing toward a culmination in these areas. Cyclical meets linear to form a spiral staircase of our development, both corporately and individually. By applying these strategies, you can become more intentional about maximizing the positive patterns and breaking the negative ones.

You can add a calendar app on your phone, and at the time of writing, iPhone has the Jewish calendar built in. You just need to turn it on in your calendar settings.       The Twelve Tribes

      Traditionally, each of the twelve tribes of Israel have been associated with a specific month in the Jewish year. You might wonder why I associate different tribes with each month when other people use a different model. The people who are teaching that each month correlates with a tribe, Hebrew letter, sense, body part, and constellation are pulling their data from an ancient book, Sefer Yetzirah which they usually won’t disclose because of the connections to Kabbalism.
