      Jennifer O’Connell led her brothers onto the mud path which was their usual shortcut across the field. The ground was dry and cracked from the sun, and the air smelled of cut grass. Behind her, Martin, the older of her brothers, sneezed.

      Jennifer turned and backhanded him across the face.

      After a month, she was sick of his hayfever. This was the first year he’d had it and, as far as Jennifer was concerned, it better be his last.

      Martin touched his cheek and gave Jennifer a dirty look, but said nothing.
