    Jennifer O’Connell led her brothers onto the mud path which was their usual shortcut across the field. The ground was dry and cracked from the sun, and the air smelled of cut grass. Behind her, Martin, the older of her brothers, sneezed.

    Jennifer turned and backhanded him across the face.
