A Vision In Time Saves Nine (Piper Ashwell Psychic P.I. Book 9) - Kelly Hashway

    Chapter One

Mitchell and I arrive at my office together Monday morning, and for the first time in a long time, we’re both smiling. It’s so odd that even Dad looks up from his laptop to leer at us. He might be my partner at my P.I. agency and a former police detective, but Dad is too baffled by our behavior to figure out why Mitchell and I are getting along so well.

What’s going on? he asks, his gaze volleying between Mitchell and me.

What do you mean? I ask.

No bickering. No eye rolling. Dad laces his fingers. Is there something I should know about?

To say my relationship with Detective Mitchell Brennan of the Weltunkin Police Department has been rocky from the start is a gross understatement. But after our last case involved me having a premonition of what I thought was Mitchell’s death, I’ve learned to open up more to him and be honest about my feelings. To an extent at least. I’ve yet to utter the L-word, except for that one time when I thought I’d lose Mitchell forever. He doesn’t hesitate to remind me of that moment every chance he gets, but I haven’t given him the satisfaction of admitting he heard me correctly or repeating the word. I’m still getting used to calling him my boyfriend.

We were just talking about Jezebel, Mitchell says. She did the cutest thing when we dropped her off at your place this morning.

So, I see you had another sleepover last night, Dad says.

No, sir. I picked up Piper this morning.

Dad shakes his head. Drop the ‘sir,’ Mitchell. It’s getting really old.

Mitchell’s face reddens, and he stares at his black shoes as if making sure he laced them this morning.

Anyway, I say, coming to Mitchell’s rescue. Jez jumped up and wrapped her paws around Mitchell’s neck like she was giving him a hug. It was the sweetest thing. My adorable golden retriever is not only the smartest dog ever, she’s incredibly sweet. She also has no trouble showing Mitchell how much she loves him. I’m pretty sure she believes he comes over to see her, and for a while, I think that was true.

Mitchell jerks a thumb over his shoulder. I’m going to grab coffee and pastries from Marcia’s Nook. Any special requests?

Whatever Marcia just took out of the oven, I say.

And the largest toasted almond coffee imaginable, Mitchell adds with a smile.

The usual for me, Dad says, still looking oddly at Mitchell.

Mitchell clears his throat and leaves, obviously uncomfortable under Dad’s scrutiny.

I sit down at my desk and turn my chair to face Dad. What gives? You were all for Mitchell and me getting together. Now we finally are, and you’re acting like… I gesture with my right hand to his scowling face.

Sorry, pumpkin. I know you two are good for each other. It’s just weird to see you both laughing and getting along so well.

Because I didn’t date in high school like a normal teenage girl, thanks to my special ability to read the energy off anything I come into contact with, including people and their most intimate thoughts, Dad and I never had to tread the waters of dating.

That’s a good thing, though, right? I ask him, knowing he needs to come to this realization on his own.

He smiles and places his hand on top of my left hand, careful not to spark a vision. Dad’s had years of practice avoiding my right hand and unwanted visions. Pumpkin, I only want the best for you. If Mitchell makes you happy, then I’m all for it. He’s already made it clear he’s willing to protect you with his life, so I know you’re in good hands with him.

I get the feeling Dad’s purposely trying to overlook the fact that I’ve put my own life in jeopardy for Mitchell as well. Thanks, Dad. I’ve never done well with conversations about my feelings, so I sit up straight and say, What do we have on our plate this morning?

Two background checks and a possible cheating spouse. Dad’s fingers click some keys on his laptop. I’m about halfway through with the first background check.

I know how Dad feels about cheating, so I say, I guess I’ll take the cheating spouse then.

He picks up a file folder on his oversized desk and hands it to me. It’s all in there. Pictures of the husband and the woman he’s possibly having an affair with. The wife thinks—

Mitchell rushes into the office, drink caddy and pastry bag in hand. Piper, we need to go.

I cock my head at him. What’s going on?

There’s been a murder. I got the call while I was in Marcia’s Nook.

Sometimes I feel like every work week begins with those words. Where, when, and how?

Mitchell pulls a coffee out of the caddy and places it on Dad’s desk. Then he removes a jelly donut from the bag and puts that on a napkin next to the coffee. I’ll explain on the way, he tells me before turning to Dad. Mr. Ashwell, this case is going to require Piper to go off the grid for a few days.

What? Why? Dad and I both ask.

Mitchell, start talking because I’m not stepping foot outside of this office until you do. I cross my arms so he knows I’m serious.

    He huffs.

Now this is more like it, Dad says with a small smile. He’s used to refereeing between Mitchell and me. I might have strong feelings for Mitchell, but they extend to how much he can get under my skin as well.

Mitchell rubs the back of his neck. There’s a new reality TV show being filmed in the forest. Ten contestants were selected to live in a huge house in the middle of the woods with no phones or contact of any kind with the outside world.

Meaning, you and Piper will have no contact either out there, Dad says.

    Correct.

And someone was murdered? I ask.

One of the contestants. The film crew had to send someone out to the station to report the murder. The house is on lockdown. No one in or out besides us, but once we get there, we won’t be leaving until we catch the person responsible.

I turn to Dad. Take care of Jez for me.

Dad gives me a stern look. Piper Rose Ashwell, you are not going to a remote location where I can’t contact you.

Maybe he’s right, Mitchell says, clearly not wanting to upset my dad. You don’t have to go. I can handle this case on my own.

If I don’t go, Mitchell might figure out who the killer is. He’s a great detective. But he doesn’t have my insight. He can’t read the people there to figure out who the killer is, and that very well might put his life in danger.

Pumpkin, I think you should let Mitchell go on ahead. If he needs you, he can send someone for you. When I don’t respond, Dad adds, Or I can turn down these cases and go with the two of you.

I don’t make enough consulting with the Weltunkin PD to turn down my own clients. I need you here, Dad. I’m not jeopardizing my business over this.

You definitely shouldn’t jeopardize your business, Mitchell says. Besides, we all know I’m going to get kicked off the force one day because of Piper, and I’m going to need you to have an agency I can come work for. He laughs, but Dad doesn’t find it the least bit funny.

It’s true, though. Mitchell’s gotten into trouble before for breaking rules to follow my visions. If he wasn’t such a good detective, his job would already be on the line.

Dad, please. I’m twenty-nine years old. You can’t protect me forever.

He lowers his head. I know he still feels guilty for introducing me to the world of police work when I was only twelve and my psychic abilities emerged during one of his cases.

Thomas, I will protect Piper with my life. I assure you of that.

Dad looks at Mitchell, totally stunned that Mitchell finally called him by his first name. I know he only did it to get Dad’s attention, and it most likely won’t happen again. Ever. Dad stands up, walks around the desk, and claps his hand on Mitchell’s shoulder. I know you will because I’ll kill you myself if you let anything happen to her.

Okay, I say, splitting them up. No one is killing anyone.

Dad’s expression softens. Your mother is not going to be happy if you miss Ashwell family dinner tomorrow night.

Oh, man, Mitchell whines. Piper, we need to go so we can solve this case quickly and get back in time for dinner tomorrow.

I’m sure if we explain to the killer that we have standing dinner plans every Tuesday, he’ll just turn himself right over to us, I say, rolling my eyes.

Dad smirks. Be safe. I hate that I won’t be able to make contact with you in any way.

I do, too, Dad. Apologize to Mom and Jez for me. I hate leaving Jez like this since her previous owner died on a case I was working. That’s how she came to be my dog. I’ve assured her I’ll never leave her like that, but even with how smart she is, I’m not sure she understands.

I give Dad a big hug. I’ll call you as soon as I’m able to.

    He nods. Love you.

    Love you, too.

    Mitchell, Dad says.

I know, is all Mitchell answers, and I’m not sure if he means he knows he needs to protect me or he knows Dad is sorry for threatening him earlier. Maybe both.

We walk out to Mitchell’s patrol car.

We’ll pack bags before we head out there. I’m not sure how long this will take.

Probably as long as it takes me to read everyone there.

Mitchell reaches over and holds my left hand. It’s not all on you, Piper.

I know, but that’s the easiest way to find the killer, right?

He can’t argue with me there, but he also knows what a toll reading the remaining contestants and all the people working on the television crew will take on me. I honestly don’t think I can do it all in one day. Not without it completely incapacitating me, which will be the worst thing to happen trapped in a house with a killer.

It takes thirty minutes to stop at Mitchell’s condo and my apartment to pack what we need. Then we’re on the road. About halfway there, Mitchell’s phone rings.

Brennan, he answers through the Bluetooth.

Hey, Mitchell, Officer Wallace says. Officer Wallace and his K9 partner, Harry, are my favorite officers at the Weltunkin PD. Mostly because they were both very accepting of me and my abilities. Just wanted to let you know Chief Johansen put Detective Sherwood on the case with you.

I turn to give Mitchell a questioning look, and he tenses immediately.

Okay, thanks, Wallace. Is Sherwood meeting Piper and me there?

Yeah, but she might actually beat you there since she got a head start.

She? I promised not to read Mitchell against his will, but with the tension in his shoulders right now, I can’t help but to pick up on the fact that Detective Sherwood is a beautiful woman, one Mitchell finds attractive.

Got it. Thanks for the heads-up.

I can’t wait to see what Piper thinks of Stacey, Officer Wallace says.

Stacey Sherwood. I run the name through my senses to see if I pick up on anything, but since my specialty involves reading objects, I don’t get anything from the name alone.

Mitchell ends the call without saying goodbye.

So, I say. Stacey is it?

    Mitchell squeezes the steering wheel.

It’s okay that you find another woman attractive, I say.

    That’s not it.

I twist in the seat to face him. Are you going to deny it? You know I’m psychic, right? Or have you somehow forgotten that?

No. I’m well aware of your psychic abilities. That’s why I’m not happy that Stacey was transferred here from Ocean City after Andrews was relocated to Tillboro Hills.

They’re on a first-name basis. That has to mean... Oh, I say, and I have to turn away because the energy rolling off of Mitchell right now is almost too much for me to bear. You two had a thing.

It was years ago. I was new to police work, stationed in a place I’d never lived before, and she’s four years older than I am, so…

You decided to make your entry into the police force extra special by sleeping with a senior detective.

He gives me a quick glance before focusing on the road again. You know that’s not who I am anymore.

I do know that. I’m just not sure how I’m going to work alongside Mitchell and this woman when I’m going to be able to read this energy off them.

He seems to read my mind because he reaches for my hand again. Piper, you are the only woman I’ve thought about that way since we met. Seeing Stacey now isn’t going to change that. In fact, I’m so sure of it I give you permission to read me when I introduce you two.

I shake my head. I’m not reading you, Mitchell. It’s not him I’m worried about.

You don’t think she’s going to be interested in me, do you? Is that the concern? He gives me a small smile. You’re jealous.

I’m not jealous. I turn to face the window, and I can practically see the green in the reflection of my face. I’m totally jealous.

Hey, look at me. He squeezes my hand.

I meet his gaze. Eyes on the road, Detective.

He glances briefly at the road before looking at me again. I know you’re not ready to hear it or say it, so I’m just going to say that you’re well aware of my feelings for you. Nothing is going to change them.

Tell me more about the case, I say, lowering my window a bit to get some fresh air on my face, which is now scorching hot.

Mitchell continues to hold my hand. All we know is someone was murdered last night after everyone went to sleep. The body was discovered in the library this morning at five. The film crew went in there to set up their cameras and found the guy facedown with a knife sticking out of his back.

"A deserted location with no outside communication and a dead body. I feel like we’re walking into Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None."

I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that’s a book.

Good job, Sherlock, I tease. Though there are a lot of differences, and I’m hoping this murder is an isolated incident.

What do your senses tell you?

Nothing since I haven’t even seen the house yet.

Fair enough. Want to play the game, though?

The game is something we use on just about every case.
