Introduction
What is anxiety and what are its psychological mechanisms of functioning? This guide aims to introduce the reader on a journey of discovery on the subject, trying to convey the currently available scientific knowledge about anxiety in a simple, but not simplistic way. The aim is therefore to offer a pragmatic and accessible tool for knowledge and in-depth study, creating the premises for building a solid theoretical basis on the subject.
In order to achieve this goal we will start first of all from a definition of anxiety, which will help us to understand how to distinguish natural and physiological anxiety from the problematic one. We will then examine the main known disorders in psychopathology related to this issue.
In particular, we will address:
panic disorder;
phobias;
social phobia;
obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD);
post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD);
generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).
As we will see in the next pages, when anxiety becomes pathological, it can be the trigger of a series of somatic and psychological reactions that can negatively affect people's quality of life. Understanding the mechanism of development of anxiety and its adaptive function can help to understand why it is actually a signal that can be traced back to a functional logic.
