    About the Author

    Endnotes

    Introduction

In trying to understand the root cause of a new disease, I like to approach it as if I am a time traveler. I imagine I am a physician in, say, 1750, and I am confronted with my 10th patient with COVID-19.

What do I make of it?

What does it look like that I know something about?

What would I do in similar situations?

At this time, knowledge of germs, vaccines, etc. are in a distant future, and so they are of no help. On the other hand, I have some confidence that since before the beginning of recorded time, humans have shown up at the Shaman’s door, the Medicine Man or Woman, with coughing, sweating, red, hot skin, and a traditional set of practices has seemed to save lives.

So, I apply the two or three ideas that follow from that analysis. If any of them can solve the new disease, I celebrate, and my time travel ends.

In my investigation regarding COVID-19, I continued moving forward in time to where I eventually got to the molecular age, where I know COVID-19’s genetic blueprint sequence, I am down and dirty with which amino acid spot on its spike protein are teaching a patient’s T-cells how to fight it, and I am in full 2020 vaccine development mode. But, of course, this amazing science comes with its own Achilles heel: a really good vaccine program can take 12 to 18 months under a perfect scenario of development. And some people are saying we need to stay in our homes until this vaccine is available!

Wait, what did I just say?

It seems that the medical world of 2020 is basically ignoring all the things we used to know to use to cure people with pneumonia, things learned over 3,000 years of history, and it is saying, Please everybody, just hold your breath until we can save you with a vaccine sometime next year!

Folks, if you are going to save yourself or your family from SARS-CoV-2 you cannot wait for the government, the pharmaceutical industry, or any other external savior in the medical community. You have to do it yourself.

As a licensed physician who also holds a PhD in biological chemistry, I’ve developed, so far, seven FDA-approved drugs. My ‘day job’ is CEO of Atossa Therapeutics (NADAQ: ATOS), a Seattle-based company that is developing FDA-regulated pharmaceuticals for breast cancer and COVID-19. These products are in clinical or pre-clinical testing, but because they are prescription drugs that need FDA approval to make available, they are not the topic of this book,

The reason I’ve written this manual is to provide a simple guide, based in science, to arm you with information that has either gone unreported or underreported in the media. While there is a lot of data, advice, and frankly false claims floating around, a lot of it has yet to be boiled down into a form that can assist people in answering the simple, yet life-and-death question, What do I do to protect myself and my loved ones against this coronavirus?

For example, when I was telling friends in late January to absolutely wear a mask at the same time the CDC was saying they might not work, I knew what was going on. Their priority was to protect the limited supply of masks then available for medical staff. When I saw this kind of misinformation coming out of the CDC, I asked myself, What is the best advice I can give a friend and their family to help them stay safe, deal with it if someone gets sick, and come out of this stronger and wiser?

Of course, because it is a new disease, by definition, it has taken turns and twists that could not have been predicted. It also has unpredictable aspects of its future: will it go away when we come out of our homes? Will it come back in the fall? If it comes back will it be like the second wave of the 1918 Spanish Influenza, which was much worse than the first wave? Or will it become our constant scourge, like seasonal influenza, where most years it comes, kills about 30,000 people, and then fades into the woodwork until the next year.

I don’t have the answers to all of these questions.

In fact, it’s going to turn out that there are mistakes in this book, some small and some not so small. There will be parts of this which will sound really wrong when it is read even six months from now. I know this for a fact because I wrote things on my blogs in February and March of 2020 that I wanted to include in the book, but when I read them later, they were (no other way to put it) wrong!

For all of those mistakes that will be forever present in this book, I apologize now, and my hope is that when you find them, you can read around those errors and continue to the next topic or tip.

When I had to weigh delaying this book until I could get everything right against my desire to get this information to you quickly so you can be empowered to protect yourself and your family in a way you were not able to before, I decided it is well-worth a little egg on my face if I turn out to be wrong on some points.

So sit back and enjoy an alkaline green tea, as described herein, as you get ready to end your shelter-in-place lifestyle and go out in the world again to see what ‘America 2.0’ looks like.

Chapter 1: What a Coronavirus Is

Coronaviruses are a group of related viruses that cause diseases in mammals and birds. In humans, coronaviruses cause lung infections that can range from mild to lethal. Mild illnesses include some cases of the common cold (which also is caused by certain other viruses, predominantly rhinoviruses), while more lethal varieties can cause SARS, MERS, and COVID-19. Symptoms in other species vary: for example, in chickens, they cause an upper respiratory tract disease, while in cows and pigs they cause diarrhea.

    No Vaccines

As of yet, there are no vaccines or antiviral drugs to prevent or cure human coronavirus infections. And mind you, some of these coronaviruses have been around for decades. Coronaviruses are enveloped viruses meaning, just like all human cells, they have a fatty membrane around them. The blueprint of life can come in two forms, DNA and RNA, and in the coronaviruses, it is what is called a positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome. That is a lot of words but don’t worry, I will explain it later on.

The size of this blueprint is about 30,000 letters long, one of the largest blueprints
