    I an sat before his supervisor’s desk, watching him sort through the forms on his desk without seeing what was going on. Ian’s feet may have been in the room, but his head burned in the torment of the recent past. He thought of his old friend Ted Ferguson, the preacher, who after reading over Jane had assured Ian he would be available to talk at any time, though Ian did not know what he would say. It had been eight  weeks since his wife had died, but every time the night came and his eyes closed all Ian could see was Jane. Not the beautiful woman who had lived and stood by him for twelve years, but the wounded lover he had been powerless to save. Ian had not driven since that night, which had wreaked havoc with his work schedule. His employment was further stressed when the company’s insurance agent had discovered the wreck was entirely the result of his sleep at the wheel. Ian was what many wome n would consider a handsome man, tall with a gaunt face showing cheekbones inherited from a mixed racial ancestry, his face bearing a beard cut short matching the ebony blackness of his hair. But today his tall form was slumped, his beard unkempt, and his gaunt face turned to the floor, pulled down by the anchor of his own depression. Hearing his supervisor speak shook him out of his thoughts and his head ached as it returned to the room.

            As much as I hate to say this, his supervisor began, "I am afraid that I cannot let the events of the past month slide. You were an exemplary employee of this company Ian ,
