    Chapter 1

    Introduction:

This is the third of the three part book on becoming a Yogi.

An accident changed my life. I left a lucrative enterprise activity that I was engaged with a friend.

I wanted to know if there was a god that saved people selectively, from almost a certain death.

That was the start of my spiritual journey. It took me nearly forty years to complete the Journey. When answer for one question found another would crop up.

I might have read not less than 10,000 books during this time. The first being the auto biography of Swami Rama of Himalayan Institute. Several books on religion Shamanism, Buddhism, Source book on music, occult sciences, English rending of eastern scriptures, Uddava Geetha, Tiripura Rahasyam, 15 paper backs by Carlos Castaneda, Life and times of various mystics. Shrimad Bhagavatam to name a few.

Met several men well versed in eastern scriptures sought clarifications and answers for my unending flow of questions. Finally I was guided by Swami Rama of Himalayan Institute whom I met in my meditation sessions.

    Seekers must have patience

I know that not many have the patience or inclination to read so many books. They look for a Guru who knew all and transfer the seeker on a silver platter.

There are several gurus with websites and five start Spiritual centres. Recently two such high flying gurus with patronage of political class are put behind the bars on several charges including murder and rape.

When I reached the end of my journey, I found that the process of becoming a Yogi is very simple. I did not come across any book that tells briefly how one can become a yogi.

Thousands of books carry a small part of the process steps in enormous detail. We expect a small book carrying all the information needed.

The last book that I read, titled Yoga Sudhakara, authored by Sadasiva Brahmendra of Nerur.

This book is based on Yoga Sutra of saint Patanjali. There are quite a few books rendered in English by various people. I found that this particular book contained all the steps (actions) that is required to become a yogi, unambiguously.

Today I find that all that is found in most of the scriptures convey very few messages, in depth but differently.

Initially these messages appeared vague and lead one nowhere. Often one needed to read them several times over to get those messages.

It is not sure if those messages gave the reader what they were looking for.

    Do not run behind Guru

Those with no patience and put in their effort, look for a Guru who can take them on a spiritual journey. There is no short-cuts to reaching goals. No guru can fast track his student’s spiritual journey.

If some guru promise that he will take you on a fast track, take it that the Guru is a fake. Many seekers were exploited and robbed by the fake gurus.

Let us get into basics before we come to facing and breaking the barriers.

I could not avoid repetition of certain stories and description which will be found in my other topics on Spirituality.

    What is spiritual?

First understand some basics. Different people attribute different meanings to the same word. Before we proceed further it will be useful to have a common understanding of some key words.

Spiritual, Spiritual journey, Spiritual sadhana, Spirituality elevated person.

Spiritual is a word that denotes anything that is non material. Every life (objects) of the material can be recognised with one or the other of five sensory organs. The objects of Spiritual are that which lie beyond what sensory organs can detect.

The atheists and agnostics live comfortably in the
