About this ebook

In the wake of the devastating Coronavirus (COVID-19) global plague, many of us have become deeply reflective of the implications of such pandemic that has redefined life and thrown ‘seemingly’ prepared nations off balance. The fear and despair in nations have been intense and palpable. The international and local news channels reel out death tolls from different nations of the world, which has only added to the panic and pandemonium created by the pandemic. These moments provide the fertile grounds to reflect beyond the worldwide confusion and truly put in scriptural perspectives the happenings of our times. It is only through the prism of scriptures that we can make sense out of the nonsense with exactitude.

Stay Safe and Stay Ready is a response to the state of the church during the COVID-19 global pandemic. The book deploys a spiritual perspective at the situation of the world occasioned by the virus that had affected 20 percent of mankind within four months, and counting, in addition to more than 200,000 deaths. A combination of forth-telling and fore-telling, Stay Safe and Stay Ready challenges the Church to look at itself from God’s perspective, and calls on individual Christians to examine their state of readiness for the return of the Master. The author admonishes us to understand the times and clear out all impediments in our relationship with God; to study, pray and do the urgent work of evangelism.

    About the Author

    Dedication

This book is dedicated to King Jesus Christ; who was, is and is to come!

    Foreword

It is indeed a great honour and pleasure to write the foreword to this timely treatise by Pastor Chukwuyem Ephraim Iroh. I have known Chukwuyem for a long time, and one thing that stands out is his zeal for the house of God. He strongly desires that the word be preached in truth, understood clearly and practised faithfully by all believers. This zeal is what drives his numerous writings and admonitions.

This book – Stay Safe and Stay Ready: Insights for the End Times is vintage Chukwuyem Iroh. It is not only timely, responding to the state of the church during the COVID-19 global pandemic, but it is also a combination of forth-telling and fore-telling. Every page drips with the urgency of NOW!

The book deploys a spiritual perspective at the situation of the world occasioned by the virus that had affected 20 per cent of mankind within four months, and counting, in addition to more than 200,000 deaths.

The pandemic has forced the lockdown of almost every human endeavour – commerce, industry, sports and entertainment, agriculture, tourism, air travel and RELIGION. For the first time in almost everyone’s living memory, church doors have been closed in virtually all parts of the world. Not by war or persecution, nor by terrorism or hostile governmental authorities, but by a force majeure from the novel Coronavirus aka Wuhan Coronavirus aka COVID-19.

This book challenges the church to look at itself from God’s perspective, and calls on individual Christians to examine their state of readiness for the return of the Master.

The author admonishes us to understand the times and clear out all impediments in our relationship with God; to study, pray and do the urgent work of evangelism.

I commend Pastor Iroh on the work he put into this very important book within such a short time. I commend the book to all who earnestly look forward to the return of our LORD and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Maranatha! Even so, come, LORD Jesus!

    Introduction

Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. (Matthew 24:4)

The year 2020 began like any other year with the usual trappings of anticipation for growth, progress and fulfilment. In Nigeria, we have become addicts of new spiritual routines - prophecies. At the turn of every New Year most Christians look forward to New Year prophecies from popular ministers and prophets, hoping to gain a glimpse into how the year will turn out. As would be expected, the popular press – together with social media – was awash with all sorts of predictions. Most times, the veracity of these New Year prophecies are in doubt because they follow the same doom and gloom patterns that we have all become acquainted with over the years.

However, in the midst of the cacophony of prophecies no one gave any clear hint that there was going to be huge disruption of the year 2020 in such an unprecedented worldwide scale. The disruptive effect of the COVID-19 pandemic has accomplished one good thing for the Christian world – many are beginning to seek God again as things men have made god in their lives have begun to fail. Many also have begun to give attention to the reality of the second coming of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

This is what has inspired this book. As I write this book, many expect the plague to abate as China, the source of this pandemic is already on the road to recovery and many other nations will follow. In a few months, the COVID-19 disease will be confined to the place of sad history with the death toll in thousands trailing the experience of this global horror. However, our earnest desire is that the message of the season will not be lost or forgotten in this generation and that all mankind that witnessed this era in human history will not forget. That is why to fully grasp these events, we have latched on to scriptures to understand their vital spiritual significance.

My hope is that every true believer will begin to live differently from now henceforth. My hope is that our hearts and consciences will not recoil to the business as usual mode which is characteristic of our nature. This book is written to inspire all Christians all over the world to become more focused on one thing – preparing for the return of the Saviour, Jesus Christ.

This book is written in simple and clear format to present very essential things we must know and do as Christians to stay consciously prepared for the Lord’s return. This will happen at the sound of the trumpet and the saints will return home to be with the Saviour forever. I believe this book will become a toolkit for all readers to understand the vital or essential elements for surviving this era that has come upon mankind.

Human history has seen other catastrophic events on a global scale like the COVID-19 pandemic. It is important to note however, that no other plague in human history has affected 150 countries at the same time, disrupting lives and livelihood in very drastic ways. A few of the well-known plagues are listed below:

HIV/AIDS Pandemic (at its peak in 2005-2012)

    Death Toll: 36 million

    Cause: HIV/AIDS

First identified in Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1976, HIV/AIDS has truly proven itself as a global pandemic, killing more than 36 million people since 1981. Currently there are between 31 and 35 million people living with HIV.

    Flu Pandemic (1968)

    Death Toll: 1 million

    Cause: Influenza

A category 2 flu pandemic is sometimes referred to as the Hong Kong Flu. The 1968 flu pandemic was caused by the H3N2 strain of the Influenza A virus.

    Asian Flu (1956-1958)

    Death Toll: 2 million

    Cause: Influenza

Asian Flu was a pandemic outbreak of Influenza A of the H2N2 subtype, that originated in China in 1956 and lasted until 1958. In its two-year spree, Asian Flu travelled from the Chinese province of Guizhou to Singapore, Hong Kong, and the United States.

    Flu Pandemic (1918)

    Death Toll: 20 -50 million

    Cause: Influenza

Between 1918 and 1920, a disturbingly deadly outbreak of influenza tore across the globe infecting over a third of the world’s population and ending the lives of 20 – 50 million people.

    Sixth Cholera Pandemic (1910-1911)

    Death Toll: 800,000+

    Cause: Cholera

Like its five previous incarnations, the sixth cholera pandemic originated in India where it killed over 800,000, before spreading to the Middle East, North Africa, Eastern Europe and Russia.

    Flu Pandemic (1889-1890)

    Death Toll: 1 million

    Cause: Influenza

Originally, the Asiatic Flu or Russian Flu, as it was called, was thought to be an outbreak of the Influenza A virus subtype H2N2. Though recent discoveries have instead found the cause to be the Influenza A virus subtype H3N8. The first cases were observed in May 1889 in three separate and distant locations: Bukhara in Central Asia (Turkestan), Athabasca in north western Canada, and Greenland.

    Third Cholera Pandemic (1852–1860)

    Death Toll: 1 million

    Cause: Cholera

Generally considered the deadliest of the seven cholera pandemics, the third major outbreak of cholera in the 19th century lasted from 1852 to 1860. Like the first and second pandemics, the third cholera pandemic originated in India, spreading from the Ganges River Delta before tearing through Asia, Europe, North America and Africa and ending the lives of a million people.

    The Black Death (1346-1353)

    Death Toll: 75 – 200 million

    Cause: Bubonic Plague

From 1346 to 1353 an outbreak of the Plague ravaged Europe, Africa, and Asia, with an estimated death toll between 75 and 200 million people. Thought to have originated in Asia, the Plague most likely jumped continents via the fleas living on rats that so frequently lived aboard merchant ships. Ports being major urban centres at the time, were the perfect breeding ground for the rats and fleas, and thus the insidious bacterium flourished, devastating three continents in its wake.

    Plague of Justinian (541-542)

    Death Toll: 25 million

    Cause: Bubonic Plague

Thought to have killed perhaps half the population of Europe, the Plague of Justinian was an outbreak of the bubonic plague that afflicted the Byzantine Empire and Mediterranean port cities, killing up to 25 million people in its year-long reign of terror.

    Antonine Plague (165 AD)

    Death Toll: 5 million

    Cause: Unknown

Also known as the Plague of Galen, the Antonine Plague was an ancient pandemic that affected Asia Minor, Egypt, Greece, and Italy and is thought to have been either smallpox or measles, though the true cause is still unknown. This unknown disease was brought back to Rome by soldiers returning from Mesopotamia around 165AD. Unknowingly, they had spread a disease which would end up killing over 5 million people and decimating the Roman army. [1]

However, these near apocalyptic occurrences have become far more frequent and intense as the ages go by. The earth is like a pregnant woman in labour and as the time for delivery draws near the intensity of the birth pangs increase. The whole earth is convulsing and agitating with greater intensity as the age draws to a close. We can also understand the intent of this book by using the analogy of mountaineering. Those who have conquered great mountains have done so through great endurance and tenacity. The higher the climb to the summit of daunting
