    Chapter 1: Time for a Change

    The Challenges of Weight Loss

    Of American adults , just under one half have attempted a diet within the year, showing how common wanting to lose weight is. It’s not unusual for people to look in the mirror and find all the things they want to be changed about their bodies and to put weight loss on the top of their to change list. You’ve probably started the new year off, several times even, telling yourself that this would be the year you’d finally lose weight. Maybe you actually tried to lose weight or maybe you put it off until the next year (and then the next year and then the year after that). Whatever your situation, if you’re reading this book, dieting has failed you, and it probably feels like it’ll never stop failing you, but as impossible as it seems, weight loss is a challenge, but it’s not unobtainable.

    Unfortunately, the statistics for maintaining weight loss after diets are bleak, but they do give good insight. A whopping ninety-seven percent of people on diets end up regaining the weight that they’ve lost. With forty percent of the United States population being classified as obese and similar trends occurring across the world, weight loss is as big of a struggle for many as the excess weight itself, but don’t let these numbers scare you because the truth is that you can’t lose weight if you’re constantly waiting for the day when your diet will finally end. Stop the fad diets that promise quick results and start making long-term changes because there’s no magical cure to weight. If a diet seems like a quick fix, it’ll probably end up torturing you.

    There are lots of reasons for wanting to lose weight, and most of them are understandable. Maybe you don’t feel comfortable in yourself anymore. Maybe you’re just not at the weight that makes your body function optimally. Maybe you have health conditions that could be helped by better dietary decisions or a family history of certain conditions. No matter your reason for losing weight, you’ll have a myriad of challenges to face as you embark on this journey because, sadly, weight loss is mentally and physically hard, but if you know what you’re doing, it doesn’t have to be as much of a burden. The main requirements for weight loss are time and patience. It’s as simple as that. Weight loss is difficult, but it isn’t complex.

    Most people who want to lose weight fall into the same old traps, but you don’t have to. You can free yourself from yo-yo dieting and dreaming of the day when the weight will finally stay off. All you need to do is be aware of what other people do wrong and act differently, and within this book, you will find lessons on how to do so.
