About this ebook
A young girl’s already isolated existence is worsened by the emergence of strange abilities.
Twelve-year-old Kyra would rather be around animals than talk to the girls at her school. There aren’t many animals in the floating city, so she’s only seen llamas, jaguars, and horses in her books. But there are plenty of birds and she never feels lonely around them.
One day she speaks to a bird—and it answers her! Now she can finally make friends who understand her. But when a huge flock of birds tries to follow her into school, everyone panics. Can Kyra figure out what’s going on and stop her new bird friends before someone gets hurt?
The Girl Who Talked to Birds is a fairy tale-style story about a side character from the Divine Warriors, a steampunk fantasy series for teens. It takes place before the main books so it can be read as a standalone.

About the Author
The Girl Who Talked to Birds
Kyra hugged her books to her chest and kept her head down. All she had to do was make it outside.
A group of students hung around the main door of Olaya Secondary School, mostly girls Kyra’s age. She tried to avoid making eye contact and walked faster, but one, a tall girl named Upasi, caught sight of her and stepped in her way.
Here comes the freak,
Upasi said with a sneer. She snagged the binoculars hanging around Kyra’s neck. Where are you going spying today, freak?
Kyra clutched at the neck strap. Please be careful with those, they’re not mine.
Another girl sauntered up and folded her arms—Poqa, who was Kyra’s roommate. She asked you a question, Miss Smarty-pants. You got all these notebooks and fancy binoculars on you. So who’re you spying on?
No one,
Kyra said, shaking her head. She
