    L isten here little brotha, said Wallace atop his stoop as he blasted the Chambers Brothers from his boombox.

    Now the time has come!

    You see those one timers right there, Wallace asked.

    Time!

    Clarence and I looked from the top of the staircase past the clutter of cars surrounded by brothas and sistas. At a bodega were a pair of police officers ordering some street food. Officers Smith and Pullman worked this side of town a decent amount. I never got much from'em, but you'd hear stories about shake downs and shady shit here and there. I turned away but Clarence had kept staring so I nudged him for his attention. Anything to keep the cops from finding a reason to talk to us.

    There's no place to run!

    So, Wallace said. They go around calling ya boy and you walk on by and maybe sometimes they're even nice to ya.

    Time!

    Me and Clarence made our way past Wallace on the stairs. I hadn't finished combing my hair and motioned for Clarence's afro pick. What's your point, I asked. We got somewhere to be, Walt.

    Good thing you've got time for this then, Wallace said with a twist of the volume knob up to beat the competing noise. Y'all used to be just boys, 'bout as tall as my knees. Now you're grown men walking around with your skates and cigarettes and I can see that.

    Now the time has come!

    Thank you Walt, Clarence tried to cut in, but Wallace stopped him with a wave of his hand. I laughed at that and he took his pick back.

    Time!

    Stop talking son, Wallace muttered. "Look I'm just saying you best not forget
