Afterword
Introduction
The human body is like an engine with many parts, each as crucial as the other, and if you take one out of the system, the whole thing crashes and stops working. When I was much younger, I used to wonder about many things, how did my body work? What made a graze stop bleeding after a while? At first, the injury scared me so bad, I actually thought my blood was going to run out, but that was not the case. I later got to realize that my body really undergoes a series of processes in order to stop blood loss. It felt like the coolest thing in the world
The body works like it has a mind of its own, sort of; it knows exactly what to do and when to do it. Most of the time, we have no idea what goes on in our bodies. In fact, the only time the body system needs our help and draws our attention is when there is something wrong in the system, the body would need your help getting things right again and after that, it takes care of itself.
Every part of the system has its specified functions, but they all managed to their jobs as well as overlapping for each other without breaking stride. It is like how the circulatory system has to take everything around the body but still helps the immune system fight disease. This looks like the bus driver trying to get everyone to their various destinations in the city and also helping the cops catch the bad guys, can you imagine! I remember how I would work with my head held high in school because I knew what went on in everyone's body. I didn't know everything, but I knew the basics, not everyone does; people generally think they don't need to concern themselves with things like this, that's what doctors are for after all. But that is so not true, it is important we know how our body system works so that we would know how to better take care of it, it would make us see the things we are doing wrong and tell us what to do right. You can't take care of your body properly if you don't understand it, now can you? We are going to look at the various systems in the body, how they work, possible things that could cause this engine of ours to stop working as it should, and how to fix it. Imagine we are taking a tour; I have already got my train set. I promise you, this is going to be fun, the human body is truly a work of art, the greatest system ever to come about!
CHAPTER 1 – Cells
The building blocks of the body
Our journey into the human body system starts with the cell, all living things start with the cell; it is the basic functional unit of life. Everything about who we are as individuals and human beings is contained in the cell. You know how in movies, the bad guys are always trying to steal the sacred orb
from the sacred temple
, then once they remove the orb from its stand, the whole temple begins to crumble down? Take Aladdin for example, once Abu took the stone out of its place, the cave started caving in; that stone was so important that without it, the cave could not have stood. , Well, that’s pretty much how the cell is, we cannot exist without the cell; it is that sacred orb
holding us in one piece.
The coolest part though, is that there are about a million trillion cells in the body, they are so many, you can’t possibly count them and most of them are found in the brain. It makes sense though, seeing as we need the brain for everything we do whether we are conscious or not. For this reason, humans, as well as plants and animals, are called multicellular organisms, we have many cells, while organisms that have one cell are called unicellular organisms: Uni
which means single. The human cell contains the DNA, which means your cells are different from mine or anybody else’. They also take nutrients and all the important chemicals and hormones from one point to the other. This is kind of like the delivery system; you order pizza, then the delivery guy takes the pizza from where it is being made to your house, where it is needed. The cells also take the chemicals and nutrients no longer needed, from where they were to where they should be; this is definitely the trashcan guy.
The human cell is made up of two basic components, the cell membrane, and the cytoplasm. The cell membrane is the cell body while the cytoplasm is everything that is inside the cell body. Look at it this way: I want you to picture a water balloon, or if you have a balloon around you, you could pick it up. Fill the balloon with water, then a few tiny rocks, sand, then tie it shut. That is what a cell looks like. The balloon is the cell membrane; every other thing inside the balloon is collectively called the cytoplasm, no matter what each of them is. Every activity which takes place in the cell takes place in the cytoplasm; these activities are termed intracellular activities. You know, in your school, if there was a spelling bee competition, and your school had to go against another school, they would term the competition an Inter-school competition
; this is because the competition is between two different schools, But if the competition were between your schoolmates, it would be termed "Intra-school competition", this is because the completion is between different students but still within the same school. Does this make sense? Now, like the inside of our balloon, the cytoplasm has different little structures called organelles, which play different important roles.
Inside the cytoplasm, there are about 13 organelles:
Nucleus
Nucleolus
Ribosome
Rough endoplasmic reticulum
Vesicle
Golgi apparatus
Cytoskeleton
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum
Mitochondrion (plural, mitochondria)
Vacuole
Cytosol
Lysosome
Centrosome
Before you get overwhelmed, I have devised a way for you to commit it to memory.
For the first five organelles, we would use the mnemonics Noisy Nick Rides Rosie’s Van
For the next four organelles, we would use the mnemonics Gill Cries So Much
For the last four organelles, we would use the mnemonics Vultures Can Live Carelessly
