Mark of Brikyif - MM Sudie

    Valkwell)

Prologue Six Months after Azoner’s fall

The time was finally right. The Human in charge of Saylon, Azoner, may have been a pitiful fool, but he had killed Aurora. Kyloc smiled as he walked to his dark-red-and-black throne. The news of Aurora being dead was cause for a brief celebration before he began to move forward with his plans. Kyloc had waited for this moment for a very long time. He would lead his people to glory as the rightful rulers of the world, which would be changed to a more pleasant state. The sun would darken as impenetrable darkness fell on the world. All the lower beings would moan and cry as they stumbled around in a world where darkness and despair ruled. The sweetness of the thought made Kyloc’s smile grow. It was time to move and create this beautiful world for his people. He leaned back in his throne to imagine the new world for a little longer when the doors to his throne room were thrown open forcefully enough to make them bounce off the walls with a loud bang. "Kliss Issfi Kyloc!" (My King Kyloc!)

Kyloc looked toward the doors with a sour expression to see who had dared to interrupt his moment of joy. Standing in the doorway was Rab’lah, his most trusted and effective spy. Her appearance was still that of a repulsive Elf, a form she knew Kyloc would not tolerate looking at. Kyloc got to his feet. How dare you come into my chambers looking like a hideous Elf! he yelled. Speak quickly before I end your life.

Rab’lah dropped to her knees, bowed her head and spread her arms wide. "You may take my life as penance, Kliss Cinglf Kyloc. (My Lord Kyloc.) I ask you to let me deliver the news I carry even though it is of a disturbing nature."

Kyloc sat back on his dark throne. Rise and speak.

Rab’lah hurried to her feet but kept her head bowed as she spoke. Azoner has fallen.

What? Kyloc got to his feet so fast and forcefully his throne was sent flying. How could this have happened? Aurora is dead!

In his overconfidence, Azoner left while the girl still drew breath. Rab’lah kept her head bowed. The girl was—

Refer to Aurora by her name! Kyloc commanded. By calling her a girl, you are underestimating her.

"Yes, Cinglf Kyloc, Rab’lah replied. Aurora was able to recover and defeat Azoner."

Kyloc let out a roar of rage making the room around them shake. Rab’lah threw herself to the floor at his feet, but Kyloc was too angry to notice. All those years of careful planning, all the time he and his spies had taken to gain control over Zarofell and now Saylon had fallen from their grasp. Even worse, the land had fallen because of Aurora, who should have been dead. Kyloc had believed Azoner could handle the one simple task of killing her, but he had failed and set Kyloc back in his plans. Aurora had been impossible to find for three hundred years and now she was allowed to live. "Kliss Issfi, said Rab’lah from the floor. I have more news of another failure."

Another failure? Kyloc wasn’t in the mood to hear of another failure. He reached down and yanked Rab’lah up by her throat. To her credit, Rab’lah did not scream or flinch as he did this. She remained silent until she was at eye level with Kyloc. The Immortal Elves have lost their control over the Mortal Elves of Saylon. Rab’lah’s voice was only slightly distorted by his hand squeezing her throat. Their attempt to wipe out the Mortal Elves has failed, allowing the Mortal Elves to start forging alliances with the Dwarves, Valkwell, Centaurs and Humans.

Kyloc let out a growl and threw Rab’lah to the ground hard enough to break bones. This was turning into a disaster. He glared down at his spy. Was this done only by the Mortal Elves, or was Aurora involved?

Aurora was why the Mortal Elves broke from the Immortal Elves control. Rab’lah did not raise her face from the ground. But they defeated the Immortal Elves alone.

Aurora was alive and the Mortal Elves were free. You know the price you will now pay for bringing me such news? he asked as a black chain appeared in his hands.

Rab’lah did not rise from the ground. "I do, Kliss Cinglf. I will let you take my life, but first, I have one last thing to tell you."

On your knees and speak, Kyloc commanded.

Rab’lah got to her knees and looked up at Kyloc. The last of my news is about the Mortal Elves and it is puzzling. While the Elves are no doubt purely mortals, they possess an ability we once believed was unique to us.

Another race with an ability only his people should have had? Kyloc did not lower his chain as he spoke. Tell me what it is, Rab’lah, and I may spare your life.

All emotion was kept out of Rab’lah’s face, but Kyloc knew she would jump on the chance to live. Rab’lah kept her voice even as she spoke. These Mortal Elves can become one with the shadows, though for the moment they do not realize it is a natural ability for them. They believe they must train to learn it. Those who can use it before they are trained are thought to be gifted. Rab’lah’s face changed to show confusion. They use this ability several times every day, but suffer no ill effects as they should.

Kyloc opened his hands and let his chain vanish. He did not know whether he should feel frustration, confusion, horror or all three. The Mortal Elves of Saylon had to be eradicated, but first they had to be studied. No one should be able to use a single ability his people had. What could possibly allow these Elves to become one with the shadows? Is there anything more you can tell me about the Mortal Elves? he asked.

"Not much, Kliss Cinglf, Rab’lah replied. They have chosen to be led by a Chronicler because they feel they must not forget the past. They are very capable warriors even without the ability to hide in the shadows. Lastly, they call themselves Shadow Elves—a name given to them by the Immortal Elves."

Kyloc nodded, still unsure of how he should be feeling. You may rise, Rab’lah. I give you back your life.

Rab’lah got to her feet and bowed. "Thank you, Kliss Issfi."

Tell Tyrelardo and Hibvat to come at once. Kyloc turned away from Rab’lah. Then I want you to find out everything you can about the Shadow Elves and Aurora.

"It will be as you wish, Kliss Cinglf. Rab’lah paused. Should it arise, who shall I give higher priority to?"

Aurora, Kyloc replied at once. We can study the Shadow Elves anytime, but Aurora must be monitored now. Do not let her discover we are watching.

Rab’lah left the room. Kyloc turned back to his throne before he remembered it had been thrown backward. He waved a hand to return it to its place. All thought of the Shadow Elves was disturbing but had to be put on hold. There was a bigger issue to worry about: Aurora. Kyloc wanted to see proof that it really was the same woman before he let himself make further plans. It was possible some other woman could have killed Azoner. Kyloc shook his head; no other woman could have killed Azoner. He glared at the door. What was taking Tyrelardo and Hibvat so long? They needed to come and tell him what they knew of this latest development and do their jobs of advising him on what his options were, but Kyloc did not need either to tell him what they were facing. He sat on his throne and crossed his arms as he stared at the door.

Tyrelardo and Hibvat did not take long to reach his throne room, but Kyloc’s foul mood made the wait seem like an eternity. Kyloc got to his feet once both had entered. Azoner has fallen. I trust the two of you know about Rab’lah’s report of who killed him.

Hibvat nodded. Brikyif’s hero was the only one who could have killed Azoner.

Azoner told us she was dead. Tyrelardo looked outraged. Were he still alive, I would kill him where he stood for lying. I hate working with lower beings like him.

None of us like having to work through lower beings, Kyloc assured him. But we have much bigger concerns now. We must find out if Aurora is truly who we fear she is.

You wish to know if Brikyif’s hero is also her daughter? Hibvat bowed his head. You will not like the answer because Aurora is who we feared. He looked up. She is the granddaughter of Tania.

Kyloc let out an angry sigh. This could not be true! Tania had been a powerful sorceress and seer. While Brikyif had not displayed the same level of magic as her mother, there was still the potential for Aurora to have the same power. Tania’s granddaughter should have been dead! If she was alive, then all his careful planning would mean nothing. Tyrelardo stepped forward. Shall we make arrangements to have Aurora killed? I would gladly take on this task myself.

Kyloc thought for a moment. Aurora did need to die, but there was a way to regain their lost land if they let her live. It would be a risk, but then if it worked the rewards would be worth any risk he took. No, we will not kill Aurora yet. I want to test and use her.

Hibvat crossed his arms. "That is not a wise course of action, Kliss Cinglf. We should kill her now and finish this before it can start."

Kyloc shook his head. Hibvat was one of the few he would allow to speak against him because it helped to have an opposing, yet loyal, view present at all times. Fool, can you not see it has already begun? We will use Aurora to our advantage. She can go ‘liberate’ all the lands.

If she liberates the lands we hold, then how are we going to retake them? Hibvat asked with a hint of anger. We have waited a long time for this day to come. How much longer would you ask us to wait just to satisfy your own curiosity?

"I would have to agree with Hibvat, Kliss Cinglf, said Tyrelardo. As long as Aurora lives, we are in danger."

I am not finished yet, Kyloc snapped at the two. Once Aurora has liberated a land, the land will need to rebuild itself. We will disguise ourselves and help them to rebuild. We will be able to take back each land as she ‘frees’ the people from those we have placed in power. Once she has finished her task, then we will crush her. Kyloc smiled. It will also help us to judge her strengths and weaknesses.

Hibvat narrowed his eyes as he stepped forward. "With all due respect, Kliss Cinglf, I believe you are wrong. If Aurora is the granddaughter of Tania, then she must be killed without hesitation."

Kyloc was careful to think about Hibvat’s words because Hibvat was often right, but in this case he felt they could take the risk. I understand the risks we face, but my decision will stand. He turned to Tyrelardo. See to it what is left of the Warlocks of Andor are returned to power and ensure they have numbers. Ensure the Valkwell learn the Warlocks are rising again. Make Wamtell cry for help and fill the Valkwell with fear. If Aurora is the woman we believe her to be, she will hurry to help.

Tyrelardo bowed before he left the room, but Hibvat did not move. Kyloc turned to him. You are dismissed.

One question first, said Hibvat. Should we run into Aurora, what should we do with her companions?

Kyloc thought for a moment. What does she travel with?

Our last report says she was with two female Valkwell, a male Dwarf and a male Shadow Elf, Hibvat replied.

Kyloc nodded slowly. I care nothing for the Dwarf, nor the Valkwell. Kill them if you must, but I want the Shadow Elf brought to me alive. We must study the Shadow Elves before we try to enter their city. He made his voice become hard and cold. Should the Shadow Elf be killed for any reason, there will be grave consequences for all involved.

Hibvat bowed. "As you wish, Kliss Issfi." He turned to leave the room.

One more thing, Hibvat, Kyloc called. I do not want anyone to move on Aurora or her companions yet. Aurora is not to be harmed in any way for any reason until I order it. They must not realize we are watching them. Instruct Rab’lah to tell her spies they should die rather than reveal themselves. Also, make sure there is no trace of us anywhere. With this new development, we cannot let even a whisper about us exist.

I understand. Hibvat bowed again. I shall personally see to it our people do not do anything more than observe for now. What of the Warlocks and any minions they gain?

Have a spy planted in a high position. Our spy shall advise the lead Warlock that it would be wise to keep Aurora alive. Kyloc paused for a moment. Make the spy someone whom you trust. I do not want any of our people to use magic against Aurora. There could be unforeseeable consequences of our magic mixing with the dormant power in her.

I will see to it none of our power is used on or against her for any reason, Hibvat assured him.

Kyloc nodded and waved for Hibvat to leave. He sat back in his throne and thought. Yes, his new plan was ambitious and would require his people to wait several years more, but if it worked, they would have the world willingly hand itself to them because of a hero. Kyloc smiled. Nothing would be sweeter than seeing a hero handing him the very world she had tried to save. No matter what Aurora did to stop him, darkness would fall on all the land.

    Chapter 1 Living a Dream

What should have been a two-month journey had begun to trickle over the three-month line even on horseback. Aurora didn’t mind the longer journey because she knew the cause and wasn’t going to be angry about the one slowing them down. She looked over at Jules. Her husband was pushing his black hair out of his brown eyes. Aurora smiled. Jules’s hair grew pretty fast and he had not cut it since they left home. Aurora looked back at the newest member of their family. Terrant was nearly nine months old, with dark brown hair and rust eyes. At the moment, though, Aurora couldn’t see her son’s eyes because they were closed. Her son was riding Kyif, the calico aritum Aurora had been given by the Dwarves. Kyif could tell Terrant was very important to Aurora and Jules, so the aritum was careful to stay within their eyesight. Aurora smiled at the aritum and her sleeping son. Jules had made a special saddle for Kyif to allow her to easily and comfortably carry Terrant whether he was awake or asleep. She looked over at her husband. I’ve said this probably a lot by now, but you did a wonderful job on the saddle.

Jules smiled. I was keeping count of how often you said that, but I stopped counting after fifty.

Aurora laughed and felt her face growing warm. Have I really said it so often?

Jules nodded. Yes, but I like knowing my work is appreciated.

Aurora looked ahead once more. In the distance, she could see the trees surrounding the city of Ril Cato. She knew Tershi lived in Ril Cato, but Aurora wasn’t sure if Nova and Wolvow would be there, or if they had chosen to live in Labyrinth. Aurora hadn’t seen Nova, Wolvow, Tershi or Thuban since the week after her wedding two years ago. She missed them and wondered how they were doing. Aurora wanted to go to Ril Cato to see if Tershi had any word about what was going on in the world beyond Saylon. Part of her hoped there would be nothing and she’d never have to go on another journey. If she did have to leave again, she wouldn’t be able to say no. Terrant began to make noise. Aurora looked down at the same time as Jules. They’d have to stop for a bit to let Terrant move and to see if he was hungry or in need of changing. They rode on a little further until they reached a tree where they could tie their horses. Instinctively, Aurora looked around for any sign of trouble before she turned to take Terrant off Kyif. The moment she lifted Terrant, she could tell he needed to be changed. She turned to Jules. Can you make sure Kyif’s saddle is dry while I take care of Terrant?

Sure. Jules walked over to take the saddle off Kyif.

Aurora was about to thank him when she saw three shapes coming toward them. For a moment, Aurora stared at the three shapes to figure out what they were. The three looked like tall Humans with huge wings. This close to Ril Cato, Aurora thought they were probably Valkwell, but she wasn’t going to take a chance with Jules and Terrant with her. Jules, take Terrant and get behind the tree, Aurora said, giving Terrant to Jules.

Her husband took Terrant and moved to take cover behind the tree. Jules knew how to fight pretty well, but Aurora was better. Aurora took her bow off her horse, readied an arrow and aimed. She wasn’t going to shoot unless she was given a good reason to. Land and keep your hands where I can see them! Aurora commanded once the figures were close enough to hear her.

The three winged figures landed with their arms held out to their sides. Aurora kept her bow raised as she walked closer to see who they were. Two of them were Valkacy and the third was a Valkyrie. All three were armed and wearing armor. The Valkacy with dark indigo wings and brown hair walked toward her slowly. Hanging off his belt was a string with two beads on it fading from green to white. Aurora lowered her bow, but was ready to raise it if needed. Who are you? she asked.

I am Authlar of Ril Cato, the indigo-winged Valkacy replied calmly. These two are Chyahjete and Halla. He indicated the blue-winged Valkacy and the tan-winged Valkyrie. We were just returning to the city when we saw you and your companions. Authlar turned back to her. Can I ask who you— Authlar’s eyes fell on Aurora’s left hand. "Ru del Amitear Aurora, say Rora tiig say Valkwell er obreesk anak." (You are Lady Aurora, the Hero to the Valkwell and many others.)

At Authlar’s words, Chyahjete and Halla bowed and spoke. "Qek alss uruch biear tiig gabek ru, Amitear Aurora." (It is an honor to meet you, Lady Aurora.)

Having people know who she was and their bowing made her feel strange. Aurora nodded. I am pleased to meet the three of you. We were on our way to Ril Cato to visit friends and see if there is any news.

Authlar nodded. Why have you stopped so close to the city?

Come on. Aurora walked back toward the tree where she’d told Jules to wait. Jules, it’s alright.

When Jules came into sight holding Terrant, realization came into Authlar’s eyes. I understand now.

Aurora smiled. This is my husband Jules and my son Terrant.

Authlar inclined his head to Jules and Terrant. I’m pleased to meet the two of you. I am Authlar. Sorry if I startled you.

Don’t worry about it, Jules replied with a smile before turning to the other two Valkwell. What are your names?

I am Warrior Chyahjete, the blue-winged Valkacy replied. I am pleased to meet you and your son.

Halla smiled. I’m Halla and I’m a warrior too.

Aurora took Terrant from Jules then grabbed a bag off Kyif. I’ll let all of you talk for a few minutes while I take care of Terrant.

As she walked around to the other side of the tree, Aurora heard Jules and the three Valkwell begin to talk. She didn’t pay much attention to what they were saying though because Terrant did not want to hold still as she changed him. Even though it wasn’t enjoyable to change Terrant, Aurora knew she would miss it if she traveled again. She’d come back to find he’d out grown the need to be changed and he’d probably be talking too. Once she finished getting Terrant cleaned up and changed, Aurora lifted him and hugged him. I wish you could wait to grow until I was sure I’d be here for you.

Terrant wiggled and babbled. Aurora smiled at him and walked back to where Jules and the others were talking. All three turned when Aurora approached them. Authlar looked at Terrant for a moment before speaking. How old is he?

Nine months. Aurora set Terrant down on the grass.

He’s so adorable, said Halla. My sister’s expecting a child in three months. I hope her baby shall be as cute as your son.

    Thank you, said Jules.

Terrant crawled around the grass then rolled over giggling for a few minutes before he saw the three Valkwell. Slowly, Terrant rolled over and stared at their very large wings. Aurora, Jules, Authlar, Chyahjete and Halla smiled at the look of wondrous amazement on Terrant’s face. I felt the same way when I first met Nova and Tershi. Jules smiled and shook his head. Nothing really prepares you for the first time you see a Valkwell.

What do you think he shall do when you reach Ril Cato? Authlar asked as he watched Terrant. The whole city is full of Valkwell.

Probably the same thing I’m going to do; smile and feel slightly out of place. Jules turned to Aurora. And find some way to get use to everyone knowing Aurora’s name.

Aurora smiled. Don’t worry, within a day everyone will know you are Jules, husband of the hero.

Jules and the three Valkwell laughed. Terrant had begun crawling toward Authlar, eyes focused on the Valkacy’s indigo wings. When Authlar smiled at Terrant, the baby laughed and began to move faster. Terrant stopped in front of Authlar and stared up at the Valkacy’s wings. The look of wonder in Terrant’s eyes made Aurora smile. How long would Terrant be able to look at the world with wonder? There was no doubt in her mind that Terrant would lose some of his wonder at the world as he grew but would still retain some of it. That was why she was going to keep going out and fighting when necessary because she wanted to make sure there would be a world for her son to see and marvel at. Aurora? You gonna come back to us? asked Jules.

Aurora looked up and brought her mind back to the present. Jules, Authlar, Chyahjete and Halla were watching her. Aurora nodded. I was never gone.

Jules gave her a look saying he didn’t believe her. You were lost in another world.

Aurora gave him a slight smile. Maybe, I was partly.

Terrant turned to look at her. His rust eyes were bright and joyful. Every time Aurora saw her son smiling, she knew she had to make sure he got to grow up in a peaceful world. Aurora smiled at her son, who instantly began crawling toward her. So what were the three of you doing out here? Aurora asked as she lifted Terrant.

Nothing really, Chyahjete replied. We were merely out stretching our wings.

We were nearly back to the city when the guards told us someone had been spotted, said Authlar. We came out to see who it was.

Aurora nodded. I assumed someone would see us sooner or later. Do all of you live in Ril Cato?

I’ve lived in Ril Cato for nearly two years and Chyahjete moved to the city seven months ago. Halla was born in Ril Cato. Authlar glanced back in the direction of the city. I doubt you’d find it very much like the Ril Cato you left two years ago.

What do you mean? Aurora hoped nothing had happened to Ril Cato since she’d last seen it.

Authlar seemed to realize his words had worried Aurora. That’s not what I meant, sorry. He paused to think. What I mean is it’s now a Valkwell city. True the population is still more Valkyrie than Valkacy, but there are a lot of Valkacy.

I’m glad to hear that. Aurora adjusted her hold on Terrant. "I know Bell Amitear Ruin and Bell Kover Antil changed the law stopping the Valkwell from living together."

It was a very welcome change to almost all Valkwell. Chyahjete paused for a moment. It is a little strange to no longer be living in Viine, but Ril Cato is a wonderful city.

Authlar smiled at Chyahjete. At first I thought I’d miss living in Algo Elum, but now I can’t imagine living somewhere else. You shall adjust just fine.

Chyahjete nodded. I shall, but it is quite different to be living so far from my father and brother.

What do you mean by now the cities are lived in by both Valkyrie and Valkacy? Jules asked.

Our people only recently began to live in the same cities, Authlar explained. My people were once enslaved by a group called the Warlocks of Andor. They separated the Valkacy and Valkyrie in order to keep our numbers in check.

Jules nodded. That makes sense. He thought for a moment before going on. How come the Valkwell didn’t live together once they were freed?

Authlar didn’t answer, but Halla did. Malila thought it would be best for the Valkyrie and Valkacy to stay separated. She believed being divided would allow each group to have an army they could call on in an emergency. Halla looked down. The Valkwell were nearly defeated by Azoner because of Malila’s decision.

Jules didn’t answer. Aurora did not like how quiet the subject made everyone. She decided to change it. Are you going to head back to Ril Cato soon, or do you want to walk with us?

"I would love to spend more time with the Rora, but I must get back home soon. Authlar’s hand absentmindedly brushed the green and white beads hanging from his belt. I’ve got family in Ril Cato I’ve got to get back to. Authlar got to his feet. Shall I let the Bell Amitear know you are near the city?"

Aurora thought for a moment. As long as she doesn’t tell Tershi I’m coming. I want to surprise any of my friends still living in the city.

Authlar nodded. "I shall make sure only the Bell Amitear is told of your arrival. He turned to the other two. Ready to go home?"

We are ready whenever you are, said Halla.

Chyahjete nodded in agreement as he stood up. Authlar smiled at the two before he looked back at Aurora. "Thash, Amitear Aurora. He turned to Jules. It was nice to meet you. Thash."

Authlar, Chyahjete and Halla spread their wings, causing Terrant to grow very excited. The three Valkwell smiled at Terrant before they flew off. Aurora watched them fly away until Jules spoke. It’s strange to hear you addressed with a Valkwell title. He smiled. Though it sounds pretty.

Aurora smiled at her husband. "I’m finding it odd too because they never used to call me Amitear Aurora. Since you’re my husband, I wonder if they’ll call you Kover Jules, or just plain Jules."

"Kover? Jules gave her a sideways look. What does that mean?"

"Lord, so when I mentioned Bell Kover Antil, I was saying War Lord Antil, Aurora explained. The leaders of the Valkwell are called the War Lord and War Lady."

Jules nodded. Alright. I’ll try to remember the Valkwellen words.

"Don’t worry about it. I only spoke Saylonien when I first met the Bell Amitear, so I didn’t call her Bell Amitear for a long time. Aurora looked down at Terrant who was looking at the sky before going on. Actually, when I last left Ril Cato, I was on a first-name basis with Bell Amitear Ruin. I knew her before she had the title."

Jules shook his head. Back in Thyith, I was the one who knew everyone, but now you’re the one who’ll have to make the introductions. It’s a little different.

Aurora switched Terrant over to one arm as she moved closer to Jules. You’ll know Tershi for sure and if Kerr has chosen to stay in Ril Cato, you’ll know him too. She put an arm around him. Tara will be in Ril Cato too. There’s three people you’ll know.

Jules smiled at her. I wasn’t complaining, just marveling at how different it’ll be for us to switch.

Aurora leaned onto Jules’s shoulder and didn’t say a word. It was wonderful to sit in the shade with her husband and son feeling like she hadn’t a care in the world. Terrant wiggled out of her arm and crawled around in the grass with a smile. Kyif lay down next to Terrant. The baby used Kyif as support to pull himself up, but made no attempt to move away from the calico aritum. He just pet Kyif and babbled at her. Kyif purred as Terrant played around her. Aurora watched her baby and aritum. She was glad Kyif liked Terrant and let him play with her. The aritum would be staying with Jules and Terrant if Aurora left again because Aurora thought it would be better for Kyif to protect her son. She closed her eyes and let the calmness of the late afternoon wash over her. On her last journey across Saylon, Aurora had learned to take time to enjoy every calm and tranquil moment she came across because the next moment could quickly become chaos. She didn’t think there was going to be much to worry about right now, but she wasn’t going to let the smooth moment pass without taking some joy from it. An arm wrapped around her shoulders and gently squeezed. Aurora didn’t open her eyes, but enjoyed being so close to Jules. When she did open her eyes, she saw Terrant still playing with Kyif. She turned her head to see what Jules was doing. He was watching Terrant and Kyif, but turned when her head moved against him. For a little more than two years, Aurora had been able to look into Jules’s brown eyes every morning and evening, but that still didn’t make it any less wonderful to look into her husband’s eyes. Jules kissed her before speaking. You enjoying the moment?

Aurora nodded. I make sure to enjoy every moment I spend with you and Terrant. She looked toward Terrant and Kyif. Every second I spend with the two of you is precious because I know I’ll miss so many seconds in the future.

Just as we value every second we spend with you because they are equally precious and we’re going to miss just as many. Jules moved his hand around on her shoulder. But we don’t have to worry right now because for the moment, we are together.

Aurora nodded. They were together for the time being and that was perfect. Terrant began to laugh as Kyif’s tail moved against him. Aurora sat up and moved toward Terrant who was distracted by Kyif and didn’t see her coming until she’d grabbed him. Terrant let out a squeal of excitement as he was lifted off the ground. Aurora bounced Terrant on her leg making her baby smile. She lay back and held Terrant close. He wasn’t so small anymore and was getting heavier. How much longer are you going to stay my little baby? Aurora asked. You just don’t want to stop growing, do you?

Terrant hadn’t understood a word, but had known his mother was talking to him. Jules came and lay on the ground next to her. Let me hold him for a minute.

Of course. Aurora handed Terrant to Jules.

Her husband held Terrant above himself and slowly moved him in zigzag and wavy patterns. Terrant began to laugh as he moved through the air. Aurora smiled. Terrant had been so fascinated when he watched the Valkwell fly and now he was in the air. Terrant didn’t know there was a difference between being held in the air and flying. He’s going to be excited when we reach Ril Cato, isn’t he? Aurora asked as she watched Jules moving Terrant through the air above them.

He won’t know what to think of all the Valkwell, Jules agreed. But he’s going to love staring at their wings for a while because they’re so different from what he’s used to.

Aurora sat up. You think he’s hungry?

I think he’s too excited to eat right now. Jules lowered Terrant slowly before he sat up. But even if he’s not hungry, I am.

Alright, I’ll get the food. Aurora got to her feet and turned to Kyif. "Vanik." (Hunt.)

The aritum purred in response before she got to her feet and began to wonder off in search of prey. Aurora smiled as she walked over to the saddles and searched the saddle bags for food. They had a much wider variety of food than Aurora had grown used to the last time she’d traveled. True the bread was still hard, but they had a bigger selection of dried foods and had the option of hunting and building a fire to cook their meat. They had a little cooked rabbit left from the one Jules had gotten for them around dawn. Aurora walked back to where Jules and Terrant were sitting. She sat down and pulled the food out of the bag. When she offered Terrant his food, he looked away. Okay then, but you’ll have to eat something before we get going again. She turned to Jules. We’ve got rabbit that needs to be eaten, dry bread and plenty of raisins.

Jules smiled. Do we have any dried fruit you like?

We did, but it’s gone now. We’re close enough to Ril Cato though; it’ll be okay. Aurora pulled out a piece of bread. Besides, I’m used to not having much for options.

Jules ate a handful of raisins before speaking. It’s been more than two years since you’ve had to not be picky about your food. How are you still used to it?

Aurora shrugged. I guess it’s something you can easily slip back into when the time calls for it. She paused to take a bite of her bread and to chew and swallow it. You aren’t mad I’m not being picky, are you?

How could I be mad? Jules smiled. My wife isn’t picky; do you know how many of my friends wish their wives were as wonderful as you?

I can’t be the only woman in the world who isn’t picky about what I eat, said Aurora as she reached into the food bag.

No, you’re not, Jules agreed. Nova was never picky either, but she’s been taken too. Jules put his hand on Aurora’s shoulder. But in addition to not being picky about food, you love to hunt, you love coming to help in the shop and you are the most beautiful woman in the world. Jules let his hand slide slowly down her arm until his hand was able to wrap around hers. And those are only a few things that make you the most wonderful woman I’ve ever met.

Aurora smiled, forgetting she had a small chunk of rabbit in her right hand. All that may be true, but I’m the lucky one because I met you.

I do not want to imagine what my life would be like without having met you. Jules squeezed her hand. I love you, so much.

I love you too. For a moment Aurora did not speak, and let the moment last. Then, she let out a small laugh. How did we get from dried fruit to saying I love you?

I think it was because I was wondering how you could eat whatever you had to so easily. Jules reached into the bag and pulled out a chunk of rabbit meat. Then, I told you how wonderful and beautiful you are. He paused for a moment. On the topic of you not being picky; if you travel again, it will be helpful.

Aurora nodded as she took another bite of her food. She was amazed at how easy it was to almost turn off her sense of taste. Though, it never helped make raisins taste better. She looked around to see Terrant crawling toward the food bag. Are you hungry now, little one, or are you curious?

Terrant looked at Aurora before he moved back toward the bag. Aurora watched as Terrant looked down into the bag to see what was in it. He didn’t look overly impressed when he saw there was just food in the bag. Jules leaned forward and pulled some of Terrant’s food out of the bag. This one’s yours, if you’re hungry. He set the little container in front of Terrant.

Terrant grabbed the container and began inspecting it as if it were a bug. When he tried to pull the lid off, Terrant discovered it was very securely fastened to the container. Aurora watched as Terrant tried to figure out the lid for a few minutes before she gently took the container and pulled the lid off. She held it out to Terrant who reached in to see what it was. When Terrant drew his hand back, there was a green paste made from vegetables on his fingers. He put his fingers in his mouth to taste what the vegetable paste was. When Terrant realized it was food, he excitedly put his hand into the jar again to get more of the paste on his fingers. Aurora smiled and reached into the food bag to grab a spoon. Once Aurora had the spoon, Terrant sat in front of her and waited for her to get a small amount of the paste on the spoon for him. Aurora was optimistic about feeding her son because for the past few weeks Terrant hadn’t spit any of his food back at her or Jules. She was surprised to find that Terrant liked the vegetable paste she’d made for him. It might have had something to do with the paste consisting of several different vegetables instead of a single one. Whatever it was, Aurora was happy to see her son enjoying his food. After a few minutes, she put the veggie paste away and grabbed the one made from meat. Terrant gave her a confused look for the first few bites, then smiled. You like this one too? Aurora asked.

Terrant reached for the spoon. Aurora let him hold it and watched as her son tried to feed himself. The result was a bit of a disaster, but Terrant seemed very proud of himself as he moved the spoon from the container to his mouth. Jules smiled. He’s not very good yet, but at least he likes his food.

Yes, he does, Aurora agreed. What surprises me is how much he enjoyed the vegetable paste I made for him. He’s never liked any of the vegetables I made before.

It’s the combination, like that soup you make. Jules looked at Terrant who was proudly using the spoon to feed himself. I know I like it better when the veggies are mixed together.

Aurora nodded. Me too, most of the time.

Terrant set the jar and spoon down and then crawled around on the grass once more. Aurora picked the jar up and secured the lid before putting it into the food bag. She grabbed the spoon and wiped it off on her skirt before putting it away. Terrant crawled back over to her and Jules and sat down. Aurora smiled at him. Was your dinner good?

Terrant crawled into Jules’s lap and leaned down. Aurora smiled again. You think we should travel anymore today, or should we stay here for the night?

How close are we to Ril Cato? Jules asked as he ran a hand through Terrant’s hair. Would we be able to get there today?

Yes, we’d arrive shortly before sunset. Aurora glanced at the trees surrounding the city. I don’t think there’s anything out here, but I know we’d be safer in Ril Cato.

Jules looked down at Terrant and thought for a moment. Aurora picked up the food bag and put it back into one of the saddle bags. When she walked back over to her husband and son, Jules looked up. If we can make it to the city tonight, then I say we go for it. It’d be nice to sleep beneath a roof once again.

And in a real bed? Aurora asked.

As long as I’m next to you, it doesn’t matter if there’s a bed or not. He smiled. That doesn’t mean I’ll say no to a real bed.

Alright then. Let’s get Terrant on Kyif then get everything loaded up again. Aurora held out her arms for Terrant.

Jules handed Terrant to Aurora before he got to his feet and looked around. Where’d Kyif go?

Aurora looked up from her son. Kyif was not in sight, but she wasn’t worried. She’s nearby, Aurora replied before calling out. Kyif!

For a few seconds, she didn’t see or hear anything, but then Kyif came into view with some kind of dead rodent in her mouth. Aurora smiled as the calico aritum came up to her and stopped. Good girl. Aurora smiled, but couldn’t pet Kyif with Terrant in her arms. We’ll wait for you to eat, but then we need to get moving again.

Kyif lay down and began to eat the rodent she’d caught. Aurora was always amazed at how effortlessly Kyif was able to rip her prey apart and how easily her teeth went through bone. Aurora turned away from her aritum and looked at Jules. Do you want to hold Terrant and I’ll get everything packed up?

Jules shook his head. I’ll get everything loaded. You can hold Terrant.

Aurora nodded and began to walk around. She wasn’t going to be able to walk as she and Jules traveled to Ril Cato because they were riding horses. It was strange to travel on horseback when she was used to walking for long periods of time on foot. As she walked, she gently rocked Terrant in her arms. Her baby was quickly falling asleep. She looked back at Kyif. The aritum was swallowing the last of her prey. Aurora smiled at her calico aritum. Come on Kyif. Aurora began to walk toward the spot where Kyif’s saddle was.

Jules was waiting by the saddle for them. When Kyif had made it over, he began to secure the saddle on her. Once the saddle was on Kyif, Aurora put Terrant into his spot and made sure he was snug and secure. Terrant hardly stirred as Aurora settled him into place. She turned to Jules. This journey is really tiring him out, isn’t it?

Well, he is still very young, Jules reminded her. He’s not even a year old yet.

Aurora nodded. I know. He’ll be a year old before he gets back to Thyith.

Jules paused before swinging himself into the saddle. You make it sound like you’re not coming back with us.

Aurora swung herself onto her horse before answering. I don’t know if I am or not. It’ll depend on what I learn in Ril Cato.

Jules nodded as he urged his horse to move. I’d forgotten we were going to go see if the Valkwell had any news on what’s happened since you were last traveling.

It’s all I’ve been able to think about. She looked ahead to the huge grouping of trees. I don’t want to leave, yet at the same time I kind of want to go. Aurora looked down. Is it wrong for me to want something that could pull me away from you and Terrant?

No. Jules shook his head. Because it’s not the adventure you truly want; you want to be around Nova, Tershi, Thuban and Wolvow once again. You miss them and I can’t blame you. Jules smiled. The four of them love you and would do anything to help you.

Aurora smiled. You’re right. I really want to see all of them again, but if we do have to travel; Nova will not come with us.

Why not? asked Jules. From what you’ve told me about your last journey, she doesn’t need to be able to fly.

That was true, but there was another reason. It’s not that. Aurora shook her head. Nova and Wolvow have children now and I know they both will not leave at the same time.

It does make sense for one of them to stay at home, Jules agreed. But how do you know it will be Nova who stays?

Because I know Nova and Wolvow, Aurora replied simply. Nova is not one to back away from a fight, but she does accept she will not be able to fight like she used to.

And Wolvow is very loyal to you. Jules nodded. He won’t let you go without him because he feels he and the Shadow Elves owe everything to you. Jules paused to consider something. How many other Shadow Elves feel the same way?

A lot. Every Shadow Elf Aurora had ever talked to felt they owed her everything. And in addition to them feeling like they owe me, they also feel guilty about the incident with Lake Omen. I wish they’d forget about Omen because I am not mad about what happened.

You know there are a lot of people who would kill to have the loyalty of an entire race, Jules pointed out.

Aurora nodded. I know, but all those people have either never had so much loyalty, or quickly grown power hungry.

Maybe that’s why the Shadow Elves are giving you their loyalty; they feel you are more than worthy of their allegiance. Jules looked ahead again. You’re the kind of person others find easy to love and follow.

Thuban had often told her she was charismatic. You and Terrant are the only ones who I want to love me. Aurora looked back to see how close Kyif was. The rest of the world doesn’t matter to me.

I know, Jules assured her. And someday Terrant will too.

Aurora looked forward to Ril Cato again. It looked like a dense clump of trees, but
