About this ebook
Beethoven's eating habits, his growing deafness and ill-health, his tendency to be suspicious of friends, his daily schedule of work, his famous contempt for etiquette, his daily walks in all weathers, his brilliant abilities as composer and conductor - all these traits and characteristics are described in this book by contemporary friends and acquaintances of the great master.
This compilation contains the most interesting, evocative, and amusing sections of letters, diaries, memoirs, etc. describing Beethoven. There are notes on the young Beethoven by his father's landlord, by young Beethoven's piano teacher, by admiring friends, by such musical giants as Rossini, Weber, and Liszt, by the poet Goethe, and by many others. The book is illustrated with sixteen portraits of Beethoven.
Arranged chronologically, this engrossing collection presents a remarkably full and convincing picture of Beethoven and his time.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This book, as the editor warns us, should be approached with caution, as some of the contributors embellish their own importance in the life and affairs of the composer. Nevertheless, as a record of how Beethoven worked, dressed, ate and socialised, it is required reading for any devotee of the greatest composer of his age. Interesting, also is the reaction by some of his contemporaries (Spohr, for instance) to Beethoven's later compositions - generally unfavourable - although it serves to remind the reader just how far his music had advanced in thirty-odd years of serious composition. The book ends with Franz Grillparser's funeral oration, at times florid but heartfelt, with which few of us would argue."Thus he was, thus he died, thus he will live to the end of time."
