HAWKESBURY RIVER GHOSTS

Most fishos who chase apex estuary fish would normally associate the term "ghost" with mulloway. To be fair, it’s probably correct too as "jewies" can be strange fish to work out and catch on a consistent basis. Over the past five years in particular though, the veil of secrecy around catching jewies on both bait and lures has lifted, and social media displays countless fish caught in our local, the Hawkesbury River. I’m not certain the term ghost really applies anymore.

Where I think it’s more aptly applied is chasing big EPs. These guys are the true ghosts. Just when you think you have them figured out, they disappear in a puff of smoke and your left pondering your techniques and approach. The ghost of the Hawkesbury will entice you to come play and then leave you stranded with fishless trips and your ego crushed into smithereens. Even if you find them, there’s no guarantee you can make them bite. Big EPs can be a very temperamental beasts at times.

That said, fish are still fish, and if you can tune into their patterns and mix that in with how the species is hardwired to operate then crossing paths with big EPs isn’t as mysterious as it looks.
