About this ebook

Gardening is a learned skill - everyone has to start somewhere, and a journal provides the best way to improve your gardening skills to ensure more successes and fewer failures.

The intent of this journal is to simultaneously teach basic gardening techniques while providing a place to record your journey with important information about the "how, when, and where" to grow food and flowers.

There are suggestions on themed gardens such as "A Harry Potter Garden", "A Young Chef's Garden", or a "Monarch Butterfly Superhero Garden" for budding Naturalists and places to either sketch or photograph your plants to remember their appearance for the next growing season.

You'll be amazed at how much you will learn by journaling about your garden!

My Garden Journal - Brenda J. Sullivan

    Part 1: Garden Themes

Humming Birds need gardens to forage and live.

Themed gardens are a great way to have fun in your yard and show off your creativity. The ideas are endless.

If your garden theme is for animals, insects (e.g., bees or butterflies), or for you, make sure you never spray with herbicides or pesticides. These sprays are toxic (even all-natural sprays), and they will seriously hurt (or kill) the very critters you’re trying to feed. So to be safe, its best never to spray unless using a compost tea.

Some of the plants listed in this section may not be available from your local garden center, or able to grow in your area for a variety of reasons. Don’t let that discourage you from finding other plant substitutes. It’s your garden be as creative as you’d like.

    1.1 A Garden For Kitty

Kitty’s love to play in the garden - make sure you have plenty of organic grass for them. Grass helps their digestive systems.

Cat’s love to play in the garden so why not plant a few things for them too? The list of plants provided is common plants that are safe for cats.

If, for any reason, you’re not sure about a particular plant, check with your veterinarian or do an online search. Some websites list toxic plants for domestic animals.

    Catnip

I haven’t met a cat that didn’t like catnip, and it’s perfect for any garden. Cats get so silly when they are around this stuff.

    Oat Grass

Oat grass is a cat’s salad bowl. They love to chew on the grass.

    Mint

Spearmint or peppermint, it doesn’t matter. These mints are a cousin to catnip, and some cats like to nibble on the leaves.

    Lemongrass

Cats enjoy chewing on this and good news, lemongrass is known to repel ticks.

This grows well in warmer climates but can grow in colder northern climates as well. Northern growers should treat this plant as an annual instead of a perennial.

Garden centers sometimes sell the plants, or you can buy stalks at the grocery store and root them in water. Then plant outside.

    Wheatgrass

This is another grass, which is like lettuce to cats. Wheatgrass is easy to grow.

    Valerian

This plant is perfect for cats that are lazy and not motivated and want to sleep all day. This plant is supposed to energize kitty.

Cat Thyme (Latin name - Teucrium marum)

This is a different plant than the favorite kitchen herb known as thyme. So verify with the garden nursery the Latin name to make sure you are buying the right
