On April 30, 1812 Louisiana became the 18th state to join the union and every year the state honors this special day.
To celebrate this birthday, Let’s Get Cookin’ will help you create extra-special food and fun drink recipes from this southern state.
We have brought together 40 sweet and savory recipes which include some of Louisiana’s state foods:
• Strawberry Beignets - beignets became the state’s official doughnut in 1986, these light and puffy deep fried pastries are a southern favorite
• Natchitoches Meat Pies - filled with ground beef and pork these melt-in-the mouth, hand held pies well deserve the Louisiana state pie title
• Sweet Potato Cajun Fritters - in 2003 this versatile root veggie became the official state vegetable
• Big Easy Chicken Gumbo - this iconic dish combines the heritage of Louisiana's very first settlers into a meal that can be changed and experimented on in lots of different ways so it’s no surprise that it’s Louisiana's official state food
• Ponchatoula Strawberry Pie - in 1980 this sweet little berry became Louisiana’s state fruit
• Brandy Milk Punch - 35 years ago to honor the dairy industry, Louisiana named milk as their state beverage
• Honey Pecan Pie – crucial to plant and animal survival, and of course for its wax and honey, the honeybee is Louisiana’s state insect

Gordon Rock is the author for hundreds of cookbooks on delicious meals that the 'average Joe' can attempt at home. Including, but definitely not limited to, the Amazon Prime bestseller "Smoking Meat: The Essential Guide to Real Barbecue".Rock is also known for other well-known titles such as "Making Fresh Pasta", "Hot Sauce", "The Paleo Chocolate Lovers" and "Vegan Tacos", just to name a few.Rock has been nominated for various awards and has recently been offered a 'Question & Answers' column in Food and Wine Magazine that will give him a greater medium to respond to all the queries readers may have after attempting his recipes. He has also been honored by the Institution of Culinary Excellence for his outstanding recipes.Gordon Rock grew up in the outskirts of Los Angeles in California, where he graduated from the Culinary Institute of America with honors. He still resides there along with his wife and three kids. He operates a non - profit organization for aspiring cooks who are unable to finance their culinary education and spends practically all his spare time either in the kitchen or around his desk writing.
