    Keto Strong - J.P. Wells

    Introduction

Nowadays, everyone is trying a new diet to improve their lifestyle and increase their health. Everybody knows the importance of different diets in preventing many diseases and losing weight, but few know of their role in increasing performance. Many different diets are available for people to follow; one of them is the keto diet.

The keto diet is a unique form of diet that focuses on lowering carbohydrate intake to a meager 30 to 50 grams. The carbohydrates are replaced by higher fat consumption in the body, which fulfills the energy requirement. It is important to take in an adequate amount of protein, as well. This causes the body to go into ketosis. Ketosis is a state in which the body breakdown fat and releases ketone bodies.

There is a misconception among the populace that people doing intense exercise need excessive carbohydrates to boost their performance. Studies have shown that people following a high-fat diet adapt easily to use fat instead of carbohydrates to fuel their workout routines. There are many other benefits, such as losing weight and long-term higher energy levels. People nowadays are eating excessive carbohydrates that it is stored in the form of glycogen inside a body. Muscle glycogen provides, mainly the muscle, the energy to go through an intense workout. When the person changes the habit and eats more fat than carbohydrates, the body gets used to utilizing fat as a source of energy for muscles in a few days.

Athletes from all around the world are required to be in tip-top shape for events and need energy, all 24/7 and 12 months of the year. This can be easily provided by them following the keto diet.

    Part 1 – Keto Diet 101

    History of the Ketogenic Diet

The ketogenic diet was introduced in the 1920s by Dr. Wild as a form of treatment for neurological diseases such as epilepsy. And its promising results controlled the diseases and made the lives of patients easier. Later, as development in medicine grew and new anticonvulsant drugs started to show better results in managing the disease, the ketogenic diet's popularity as a cure for epilepsy shrunk. Some research was still being conducted, but it was not as prominent. It was not discussed again in culture until the son of a famous producer in Hollywood, Jim Abraham, use the diet to better his condition of epilepsy. This happened in the 90s and the child's great recovery from the disease, give confidence to the public to adopt this type of lifestyle for themselves. This caused the discussion to come into the light, and more and more studies started being done on ketogenic dieting. The study showed the benefits, and the people started to follow the diet to better their condition themselves. By 2007 many clinic centers open around America, providing information regarding this diet.

Nowadays, people follow this diet and its variants, such as the Atkins diet to lose weight mostly. And now its benefits are starting to become clearer, and people from different aspects of life like athletes are adopting it as well.

Keto Diet – How Does It Works?

The basic principle of a ketogenic diet is to replace carbohydrates as the main source of energy with fats. Fats have a higher molecular energy level and deliver almost twice the amount of energy when burnt. In fact according to data supplied by the USDA 1 gram of fat will supply 9 calories of energy, whereas both protein and carbohydrates will supply 4 calories of energy per gram.  This is why the body uses fat as its method of emergency reserve energy. We eat an excess of carbohydrates every day, so our glycogen reserves have also built up in our bodies. By doing the ketogenic diet, we are also melting away these glycogen reserves.

When starting a ketogenic diet, the person eats more fat and a lot fewer carbohydrates than before. Their carbohydrate intake becomes 20-50 grams daily. Our body's cells, which are used to breaking down carbohydrates for energy, become starved by the lack of carbohydrates in the blood. To counter this starvation, the body cell starts to use different fuel to get energy. Fats have almost twice the amount of energy as carbohydrates. Through a process called ketosis, fats are broken down into three ketone bodies which provide energy. These three ketone bodies are acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate, and acetone. When these molecules are found in high levels in the blood, the body is said to be in a state of ketosis. Usually, a foul fruity smell emanates from the mouth when this happens. This is mainly due to the ketone body,
