Waking up

GOOD: Sleep with the curtains open so that you’re woken by natural light. The sudden noise of an alarm can trigger the body’s protective ‘fight or flight’ response, increasing stress levels, say researchers. Waking naturally gently stimulates energising hormones like serotonin, cortisol and adrenaline and inhibits the sleep-inducing melatonin.

GREAT: For dark mornings, use a ‘dawn simulator’ alarm (£74.95, ). Psychologists at the University of Westminster found that people who woke using one of these reported feeling more alert and less tired.
