Gird your loins – it’s Beltane!

Beltane, which begins at moonrise on May Day, has a very special place in the pagan calendar. It marks the beginning of the second half of the ancient Celtic Wheel of the Year, and it’s a festival of light and life, celebrating the fact that the trees are budding and green, the fields full of lambs and the hedgerows full of nests.

Although a lot of people probably aren’t aware of their origins, many of the old Beltane traditions still exist today – such as the maypole, which school children dance round
