PART ONE
Before we move onto the self-protection/defence aspect a bit later on I would first like to discuss the advantages of combining correct breathing alongside the more physical aspects of combative training. I promise I’ll try not to make it too boring for you okay. All I ask is that you stick with it as I think you’ll learn some interesting facts about breathing to fight and fighting to breathe. With that said let’s start shall we.
Breathe to fight. Fight to breathe
In the martial arts or any other combative type of system relaxation, calmness under fire, physical attack is a vitally important factor to master the fight or flight syndrome learning deep breathing is considered a proven way to do just that although, it is not the only thing but it is a highly desired skill to acquire. Notice I said skill not technique that is because in my mind learning how to breath properly under stress or not as the case may be does take time to understand and master the said principles in order for it to be effective which means, being able to use it to your advantage in any situation.
Not only that, but the benefits to your health are many that’s why, deep breathing has been used for many centuries in many different cultures around the world because they all recognise the importance and health benefits from doing so. Furthermore, some of the advantages of doing deep breathing exercises are well known it’s free can be done by anyone, anytime, anywhere has no side effects, uses no drugs and can be practised with minimal effort to achieve better health and well-being.
As previously stated, the techniques of deep breathing have been used for many centuries by Buddhist monks, martial artist and Shaolin monks and other religions for meditation, relaxation and spiritual health. Whatever way you choose deep breathing exercises can benefit your health in other ways convential therapists cannot.
For the martial artist or combative trainer practising deep breathing techniques can reduce tension in the body, help loosen tight muscles meaning less aches and pains. Plus, when you are in a situation that increases you respiratory rate among other things known as the fight or flight response deep breathing can counteract this feeling which in turn helps you to keep calm under stress allowing you to deal with the problem calmer and decisively enabling you to function at you maximum capacity. In addition, deep breathing exercises fully oxygenate your brain enhancing your ability to think clearly. By raising the level of endorphins the body’s natural painkillers which help decrease the feeling of pain which means, deep breathing can counteract pain in the body by diminishing the perception of pain.
By practising deep breathing exercises when done properly
