The Building Block, Keys to Life and Effective Living - Chris Kaumba
CHAPTER 1
CURRENT REALITY
In the societies we live in today, there are people who feel their life has stalled, while others feel they are just scratching the surface and for some they do not care anymore for they have lost hope. Even so, there are those that believe that there is more to life than just existing. Unfortunately, they are not fully happy with their present life, they are far from being satisfied with what they have achieved until now and are living a life of experiment. All they do is try out different things in the hope that they will find meaning and fulfilment.
To this end, the question one would ask is; what is life and what is the purpose of life in the first place? In my quick search for answers to the two questions on google, my search query brought thousands of results as you would normally expect when you search using a search engine. One of those definitions is that Life is the aspect of existence that processes, acts, reacts, evaluates, and evolves through growth.
What was interesting was that each one of the results gave a different version and definition of what life is. After checking through and reading various definitions, my conclusion is that ultimately, there are different, and many definitions of what life is.
For me personally, the whole exercise further reaffirmed that there is a lot that I do not know and need to learn about life. One thing I know, and I am sure of is the fact that everyone desires, wants and needs to live a great, a meaningful and fulfilling life. The definition, meaning of what such a life entails might be different from person to person. However, one thing is certain; a great life must fulfill specific human needs. The basic ones are the need to live a purpose driven life, the need to feel valuable, to feel important, to have a life of meaning, fulfilment and have personal power. Other needs are to be in love and be loved, to have peace of mind, feel and be successful.
Regrettably, for most people in the world today, the life they lead is not fulfilling these needs. Instead, many live a life where there is growing pressure, worry, debt, low self-esteem, lack of opportunities, stress, tiredness, and lack of mental clarity. In fact, for many, problems and challenges just keep increasing to the extent that it makes them wonder if it is possible to ever be in a position where they can ever live a life they deserve and want. As a result of that background, this condition I believe has led some people to desire a life without problems and challenges.
Many people end up feeling powerless, cultured to waiting for others to do something, blaming the government and others for the struggles and challenges they face and to be experts in complaining. To them, every day feels the same and is the same, as all they do is to wake up every morning and do the same things they did yesterday and the day before. They wake up, eat, to some they go to a job which they do not even like, come back home later in the day or evening, only to eat, watch TV, go to bed and repeat the same repeatedly. They continue to live their life the same old way, in the comfort of their less productive lifestyle be it that they face growing problems and challenges. They simply feel comfortable to continue with their usual self.
To them, making changes to their current lifestyle, making a decision to take responsibility, taking control of their circumstances by living according to their purpose and following their vision, doing what they know to be right, focusing on their uniqueness and on doing what really matters is very scary, makes them fearful. As such they would prefer to remain in the coziness zone while expecting and desiring for things to be better.
To such people, money gives them hope for they believe that if they can just have more money, money will be the answer to all their problems and challenges. They believe only money will give them the power to make things right and lead them to live great lives. As a result, many people seek and pursue money. Money becomes their focus. In culmination, they became obsessed with thinking and making money.
Inopportunely, those who pursue and seek money, money eludes them. Besides money cannot fulfill the human needs, this is not to say money does not matter. In truth, money in the right hands indeed becomes a useful tool for good. Nevertheless, money by itself cannot give a person true meaning, it cannot give true love, peace of mind and it cannot make a person truly happy. Even today, there are a lot of people with a lot of money but are depressed, live lonely and unfulfilling lives.
What money does is to review the true character of a person. It simply illuminates what is inside a person`s heart. In other words, money amplifies inner traits. For example, if you have love in you, the love will be amplified, and you will be able to touch and influence the lives of more people. The opposite is true, with money the hate will be amplified causing more harm to others.
For the reason that there is lack of meaning, true love, genuine peace, and true happiness in the lives of so many people today, some people are depressed, careless, they turn to sex, alcohol consumption, taking drugs in the hope that they will be able to fulfill those needs. Let me be quick to highlight that as with everything else in life, drugs, alcohol and sex are meant to be used for specific purposes and if used accordingly then they achieve desired results. I am also alive to the fact that alcohol, sex, and drugs are used and are meant for a specific period, under specific circumstances at the right time. The use can be experimental, recreational, situational, intensive, dependent and therapeutic
