    Introduction

My name is Katie and I am here to help you get through a life of living with Retinitis Pigmentosa. I was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa when I was six years old but my mom knew there was something wrong with my eyesight since I was a baby. I have twenty-eight years of experience living with vision loss and I would like to share my tips and tricks to dealing with vision loss.

This book will take you through my life journey and share what I learned on the way.

How to Deal with Your Child’s Visual Impairment

In this section, parents will learn how to raise a child with a visual impairment. The biggest take away from this section is to treat your child like any other child. Yes, they will need some extra help sometimes but if you coddle them and are a helicopter parent, your child will miss out on fundamental childhood experiences. They will also grow up without independence. I promise you, your child can do anything a sighted child can. Just give them the opportunity.

    Blending in with the Crowd

Bullying is a huge problem for many kids in today’s world but anyone who is different is bound to be picked on. In this section, I walk you through ways that I have learned to avoid bullying. From what to wear to how to act, you can blend in with the crowd and hopefully avoid some of the scars I still bare.

    We’re Going to College

Striking out on your own for the first time can be an exciting and anxiety filled occasion. College will, for many of you, be the first
