The Strength of a Woman

About this ebook
The Strength of a Woman by Razia Sulliman is a non-fiction book describing how women can be the best they can be. An introduction, eight chapters, and a conclusion comprise this relatively short book. The book is concise and delivers a lot of clear guidance to help women navigate their lives. Each chapter begins with a quote, and the author follows it by reflecting upon its meaning.
The first chapter discusses how women perceive themselves. The author encourages women to spend time on introspection and not think that they should aspire to be what society has labelled them. The author expresses that women must find balance in logic, decisiveness, strength, intuition, and emotion.
Further chapters discuss a woman’s journey through life. Although all women have dreams and aspirations, they should not be afraid to veer off their intended direction and experience the beauty and fun of life. Women don’t have to stick to society’s rules, and even if a plan fails, it does not make a woman a failure. Disappointment and loss are also parts of life that are unavoidable. In the long run, if dealt with correctly, these parts of life can enhance strength and the possibility of future success.
The quotes at the beginning of each chapter were well chosen and impactful. “A woman is like a tea bag - you never know how strong she is” is my favourite. I loved this sentiment, and it speaks volumes about the strength, resilience, and determination of women. After each quote, the author reflects on them and draws her interpretations from them. There are also opportunities for the reader to become interactive with the book. There are sections to make notes and observations, and perform some thought-provoking exercises suggested by the author. This addition made the book feel like a form of therapy and guidance.
The author uses some personal experiences and experiences of a lady she knows in the book. These parts were an excellent tool to show the themes in each chapter. For example, some extracts show how a woman’s life took some wrong turns but ended up where she needed to be despite these events. These are great teaching points to show that life has good and bad times, but we can still heal, recover, and continue on our journey.

Introduction
Most of us have all heard quotes about women:
A woman was made from a man’s rib
Not his head to be above him
Not his feet to be stepped on
But from his side to be his equal
From underneath his heart to be loved
OR
Behind every powerful man
Is a strong woman, carrying him through
This book aims to speak to quotes like these. The quotes that speak to what women are supposed to be, or what it is that women seek, desire, or deserve. Each chapter starts with a quote and looks at different ways of understanding it. The main focus will be on tapping into ourselves to identify and open up our own strength. The last chapter looks at understanding a woman’s heart and the road that every woman walks in her life.
You might ask how this is possible when no person can ever walk the same path as another; when none of us are the same and therefore respond to challenges differently. The answer quite simply is that we all face similar challenges in different ways.
It is the different ways in which we face these challenges that differentiate us as people; the challenges however, remain similar.
Whether the challenge is in relation to family, own identity, self-perception, or maybe even love, these challenges can be perceived from an individual perspective or a gender perspective.
The book does not aim to align all women or even imply that all women are the same but rather to show that the strength of a woman remains the same through all the challenges we might face. It never wavers. It is however important to remember…..
You can only truly understand once you have walked a day in someone else’s shoes.
Chapter 1
The Start Of A Woman’s Life
A strong woman understands that gifts such as logic, decisiveness and strength are just as feminine as intuition and emotional connection. She values and uses all of her gifts (Rathburn n.d.)
Not all women are lucky enough to be born into a family surrounded by love and affection. Some are born into homes with a single parent, others in an angry home, still some with no home at all.
Each of these are different; the lessons learnt in each are different, but which woman can deny that from a young age, she learnt that women are emotional creatures? This might not have been learnt from close family or even family at all. It will have sometimes been implied by how people behave around you or said outright by people in your surroundings. It might not even have been directed at you, but would have most likely been there.
Learning this from a young age affects the way we see ourselves, it affects the way we live our lives, and at some point, each woman should stand still and ask the question:
Is that really all there is to me?
Although we may all agree that the answer is no
because we were taught this from such a young age, many of us still doubt this answer. Often, when we are rational about a situation, we sit back and ask ourselves, am I being emotional?
. It is time to let go of this mindset.
Something that is important to understand is that when we second guess ourselves, we cause an unnecessary struggle within ourselves. We all face battles daily, and we overcome them, but the hardest battle is the one we fight within ourselves. We often ignore that battle or pretend that we have a hold on it. This reaction is one of self-protection. We attempt to protect ourselves from the things we do not want to face, but this is the emotional reaction. It is important to face ourselves in full. It is only then that we
