Overcoming Childhood Obesity. What You Must Know and How to Do It Properly - Dr. Tina Anyikwa

CHAPTER 1: CHILDHOOD OBESITY - A DEVELOPING TROUBLE

There is an obvious difference between today's children and the ones from a generation or two ago. Some studies even show that they hit puberty at an earlier age. They seem to taller, smarter and mature faster than we were at that age. Unfortunately, there is one other problem affecting today's children - the trend towards obesity. Evidence suggests that most children in the united states are obese. But what exactly is obesity? Why are there numerous overweight children? Is your child obese? If yes, what are your best solutions? In this chapter, you will discover how to diagnose obesity in your children, the physical and emotional problems associated with obesity.

How to diagnose obesity in your children

First, infants and babies are never obese. Since toddlers still have their protruding bellies, it’s difficult to determine whether they are overweight. However, for your older children, you (the parent) may not acknowledge your child's problem until you were made aware by a healthcare professional. Listen to your child's doctor when he tells you that your child is obese. He's neither mean nor being judgmental. He is like you - he has your child's best interest at heart. Your child's doctor who evaluates adiposity is the person who can make a true diagnosis of obesity in your child. Adiposity is the medical term for the level of 'fatness' in a person. Using an MRI and an underwater scale are two expensive methods for measuring adiposity.

Other methods for measuring obesity are:

    Caliper Readings

Calipers can measure the subcutaneous fat at certain points on the body. Though caliper readings are difficult to reproduce, they are an accurate way to diagnose the amount of fat in a person. When used by a true expert, calipers are reliable and easy to use.

Measuring and Comparing Fat Distribution In The Body

While it's rarely used because it's a less-than-perfect science, some doctors still use it to evaluate obesity in children. The medical community is yet to ascertain the circumferences and ratios in the body that connotes obesity.

    The Body Mass Index (BMI)

The BMI is a chart that differentiates between an obese child and an overweight child. Doctors commonly use it not just for children but also for adults. This chart measures the quantity of someone's weight with the height within the person's body frame. If you've observed closely during the times you took your child to the pediatrician for a checkup, you will discover that his height and weight are always recorded on a chart. These numbers are used to calculate weight and height percentiles. The combination of these percentiles is used to determine whether a child is obese. An obese child will have a high weight percentile but a low high percentile. But an overweight child will only have a high weight percentile and a high height
