In terms of advancing the industry, augmentation is the big thing. Combine bigger and better screens – digital drawing boards – like the Microsoft Surface Studio and Surface Hub 2 with augmented reality headsets to improve visualisation, and ‘ear pods’ for hands-free control, and architects will work in a fully immersed design experience. Being ‘augmented’ will eventually be about increased human capability through AI (artificial intelligence). For example, in the same way I get spelling checks and grammar suggestions in Word, I will get design checks – compliance to fire code, real-time structural analysis – as I design.
