ow can art advocate for, or create the conditions for, democracy? This question has animated Tehran-born Siah Armajani’s works since the late 1950s, and has new urgency today. At NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore, (1988), a tribute to two Italian-American anarchists. The wooden installation houses a bench and desk, with seating outside, and a library of books by poets, philosophers, and political activists Armajani has dedicated works to, including Hannah Arendt, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Emma Goldman, and Nima Yooshij.
