There’s an old saying that goes, “It’s easier to beg for forgiveness than ask for permission.” That may work in some circumstances, but building your dream log or timber home isn’t one of them.

Before any work can begin on your home, a variety of permits are usually (although not always) required, starting with the building permit. The permit is issued by the city or county building commission and is the government’s method of ensuring that all construction in its jurisdiction conforms to an approved standard. The building permit also ensures that all new construction is added to the tax rolls.
