FIFTEEN YEARS AGO, Robert Andrews filled out more than a dozen college applications and just as many essays, all in longhand. “As a first-generation college-bound student, I had no clue what I was doing,” he recounts. Now DePauw University’s vice president for enrollment management, Andrews has the experience to give qualified advice about the application process.

While the methods of applying have changed substantially—with parental pressure and expectations making national headlines—one thing remains constant: Universities are seeking wellrounded individuals, prepared both academically and socially, to embark on the next chapters of their young lives.
