The Day Before They Came.
One.
––––––––
The day before they came, we were complex. Too complex. We had discovered, developed and perfected increasingly more complicated ways of manipulating, controlling and destroying both the creatures and the environment of our planet.
We had polluted our world. We had destroyed eco systems. We had destroyed life, both human and animal.
We had also allowed our governments to do all of these things on our behalf in the name of self-protection, greed or progress. Wars were initiated and waged on the populations of countries other than our own to protect either ourselves or our allies who were under threat from those countries, often whether that threat was real or not. We allowed destruction of vast swathes of our world on grand scales to fuel our greed for consumer goods, personal wealth, travel or comfort.
Skies had been obscured by chemicals. Seas had been polluted by both chemicals and plastics. Land had been stripped of its ability to grow vegetation. These activities had been carried out with our implicit consent. We all knew that our governments were not always working with our best interests at heart. We distrusted both our politicians and our administrations.
They day before they came, we had begun to form groups across our world to protest against the activities of our governments that we did not agree with. We had decided, as a disparate set of groups that we were going to hold our governments to account for some of their actions. We were beginning to tell our governments that we were no longer giving implicit consent to their actions. We were beginning to tell our governments that we were no longer complicit. We had realized that we were contributing to our own demise.
Our various governments reacted in similar ways to each other. They increased and deepened their secrecy, their societal control legislation, their law enforcement powers and the involvement of their militaries in civil
