    In designing our Idea House, the architects at Rosney Co. created southeast-facing outdoor spaces to capture sunrises. They also built multipurpose outdoor rooms, like the dogtrot between the garage and back door (below). A large oversize soapstone sink (bottom) transforms the breezeway into a beautiful, utilitarian space. It’s a great place to arrange flowers or wash up, and it doubles as a potting bench, says Rosney Co. We wanted to take full advantage of all the outdoor spaces in this house, and this open-air room really does that.

    WE LOVE striped outdoor rugs (that are mildew- and fade-resistant) for their timeless look.

    This 10- by 26-foot porch was designed and built in the same vernacular style as the circa-1920 clapboard farmhouse. The simple railings and exposed ceiling rafters are painted white to match the house; the pine floors are stained soft gray. New wicker seating from Pier 1 Imports— topped with patterned cushions and pillows in a palette of blue, white, and beige—creates an easygoing country feel. Lush potted plants and flowers in baskets bring on more color in abundance.

    For a cohesive look, choose period-appropriate materials and finishes that don’t look out of place. On the porch of this Carpenter Gothic-style cottage, built around 1890, vintage green wicker rocking chairs (complete with faded chintz cushions) and chipped wood furniture add patina and authenticity. Designer Rachel Halvorson adopted a single color palette that let her mix textures to her heart’s content. To keep the aesthetic truly airy, she suggests incorporating fewer pieces of furniture.
