About this ebook

This study examines the differences between five inaugural addresses delivered by three US Presidents. The purpose of this study is both to gain insight into the speeches and to document a technique for analyzing such speeches.

The themes identified in this study are accusation, challenge, gratitude, hope, ideals, information, opinion, promise, and warning. The stages of inclusivity examined are self, friends, people like us, citizens, multinational, humanitarian, and ecological. The variance between speakers and speeches is measured multi-dimensionally and examined for clues about the speaker's intent.

The technique used in this study is unveiled gradually with one layer added upon another layer sequentially until the full technique is defined.

    Preface

Before going any further, let me state the obvious - most people will think this book is boring. This book is like a murder mystery in which no one died, the police were never called, and everyone lived happily ever after. Even so, if you like a great mystery, if you have patience and persistence, and if conditional formatting in a spreadsheet excites you, then you might find this book fascinating.

Personally, I found this study compulsively fascinating. I worked on this book with enthusiasm because I felt I was gaining insight into how three US Presidents strived to convey their thoughts to the public. I eagerly worked on this study to gain that wisdom. I authored this book so I could share what I learned with you.

If you want to follow along, view the full data set, and check my calculations, there are links in the final section of this book which will give you access to the Google Sheets spreadsheet I used and a Google Docs document which contains png copies of all of the images. As an owner of this book, you have my permission to copy both the spreadsheet and the images for your personal use.

    Introduction

There are two purposes for this book:

    1) I wanted to gain insight into the focus George Walker Bush (Bush), Barack Hussein Obama II (Obama), and Donald John Trump (Trump) strived to convey in their inaugural addresses.

    2) I wanted to share what I learned - both about those US Presidents as well as the technique I used for analyzing their speeches.

I believe I learned a lot through this study. I gained a greater appreciation for the 2001 inaugural from Bush. I found a significant shift in focus between Bush’s 2001 and his 2005 inaugurals. I came to appreciate the tight focus Obama maintained in each of his inaugurals. And I came to understand the technique Trump used to add energy to his speeches.

Perhaps I can explain what I learned by way of analogy. Suppose Bush in 2001 was a virtuoso of country western music. In 2005, then, we might have expected another rendition of country western. Instead, Bush in 2005 dished out a selection of international pop. His change in focus from 2001 to 2005 was significant.

Now, if Obama in 2009 gave us Chicago style jazz, his 2013 inaugural was a mix of New Orleans jazz. If all jazz sounds the same to you, then the difference was imperceptible. To jazz aficionados, however, the difference was significant.

Trump delivers rock music. He sometimes sets the volume to 9, occasionally adjusts the volume to 10, and often turns the volume to 11. Some of us might think there is no setting for 11, yet he tries anyway.

Within this book I unfold my study slowly. Each chapter adds one more layer to the analysis. The chapters on technique describe how I went about selecting and categorizing the data. I began with five inaugural addresses. In an effort to gain insight into why Obama’s 2013 and Trump’s 2017 inaugural speeches were different from the other three, I added four more speeches into the mix. This added insight, yet later in the study, I felt it necessary to add yet another two speeches into the study - bringing the total to eleven.

The chapters regarding themes describe my efforts to analyze the way each speech blended a mix of themes. Themes are like the mix of styles in a musical performance. In 2001 Bush talked about the challenges we face. In 2005 Bush spent energy reminding us of the ideals we strive to achieve. Obama in 2009 was primarily focused on expressing his opinion about what is and what could be. In 2013 Obama delved more deeply into the challenges facing us all. Trump in 2017 gave us his opinion but added dynamic range to his speech by intermixing accusations and promises.

The chapters regarding inclusivity describe my efforts to analyze who each speaker was striving to include. In 2001 Bush talked about people like us - the common people. In 2005 Bush put a lot of effort into talking about multinationalism and the role of the United States in global affairs. Obama in his two inaugurals maintained a tight focus on people like us, yet, in other
