Introducing Blowout
Blowout: Corrupted Democracy, Rogue State Russia, and the Richest, Most Destructive Industry on Earth by Rachel Maddow is an interesting but horrifying book about the secrets of the oil and gas industries. She shared an event that happened in 2003 when a powerful head of state originated a small, new gas station business in the Manhattan neighborhood. The all-powerful man mentioned was Vladimir Putin, who, at that time, was publicizing an American gas station acquired by Lukoil, a big Russian oil company. The occurrence marked the midpoint of the oil and gas industry and its influence on people all over the world.
Maddow shared the story of Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue. son of Equatorial Guinea’s longtime dictator, whose country’s oil revenues grew from $2.1 million in 2003 to $3.9 billion in 2007. Though their country received that huge amount of money, a non-governmental organization in 2009 has observed that more than half of their population doesn’t have access to safe water, 77 percent lived in poverty and the mortality rate was high even before reaching the age of 40. Teodoro, on the other hand, lived a very comfortable life. He owned million-dollar houses in Paris, Malibu, and South Africa. He has yachts that were considered as one of the world’s largest and possessed large numbers of racecars. He gave his girlfriends each $80,000 worth of money for shopping and have his drivers accompany them. In 2010, his expenses in an auction house could have paid 3,300 of his countrymen’s annual
