    INTRODUCTION

    Men, Where Are You?!

OUR WORLD IS IN a moral decline, and as a result we have lost the scope of what it really takes for a male to become a man. When we look at the plight of a man today, we see the results of this loss. Fatherless families, infidelity, abusive tendencies, acceptance of lack, and the inability to face upfront issues. These struggles are just a small glimpse into what men face, but each struggle is a battle that men must learn to overcome. They each pose a direct threat to who God intended for men to be. There are too many men walking through life ignorant of the solutions to these life battles.

We have valued individual rights and freedom above any other moral principle. Freedom and individual rights are pillars for our great democracy; however, they need to rest on a solid foundation built with the knowledge and understanding of moral consciousness. Moral consciousness is an inner sense of what is right and wrong in one’s conduct and motivation. For our moral consciousness to work effectively, it must be based on a belief system without error. Therefore, our moral consciousness must be centered around not ourselves, but around our God.

God has no flaws and cannot err

This book highlights elements of man’s moral consciousness extracted from Adam’s experiences with God in the Garden of Eden which enabled him to become a healthy man before the fall. The book focuses on seven main core values (disciplines) which together build a healthy moral character. Those are: Surrender, Order, Purpose, Boundaries, Responsibilities, Authority, and Love, all forming the foundation for our moral knowledge. These core values help to create a healthy man who wants to strengthen his character. Character is all about establishing healthy habits that lead to honoring God.

By awakening our moral consciousness, we can see manhood in a whole new light. We see a path to a totally new awakening of our consciousness about being a man—a man can then move out of the shadows of wanting to be a so-called good man and come to rest in becoming a healthy one.

When God created Adam, He created him complete, whole, and lacking nothing. Everything Adam needed to become the man God ordained him to be was deposited in him. But he had to fight for what was inside of him. That was the challenge. Adam had no prior experiences to base his life on. To become the healthy man God intended him to be, Adam would need to rely totally on God for help.

Growing into a man unfortunately comes with no instructions. You must either go through the hard pains yourself or gather information from someone who has the scars and bruises but came out victorious on the other side. This book is dedicated to the men who can learn from the mistakes of others, which saves him a lot of pain and anguish.

Adam had to go to the source to gain all his knowledge for becoming a man. That source is found in God. We, too, must learn to rely on God for that knowledge.

"You have to work with God,

in order for Him to work through you"

In Genesis 3:8, Adam and his wife would hear God walking in the garden. How did Adam know this was God? Unless he’d heard this sound many times before, he couldn’t have recognized it was God.

The study of God’s Word tells us to be careful not to add or subtract to His Word (Deuteronomy 12:32). But here, the facts seem obvious. It looks as if God came down and frequently met with Adam, who seems to have been an intelligent human being. We know this because he was able to name all the animals. Why would God find a need to come and cohabitate with him? It looked as if Adam was missing something that only God could give him. Just because Adam was intelligent didn’t mean he operated in wisdom.

Wisdom is the ability to use your experience and knowledge in order to make sensible decisions or judgments. By God’s introduction of wisdom into Adam’s environment, Adam maintained access to God. The information Adam gained from this allowed him to combine his intelligence with God’s wisdom, which resulted in his environment being good. The moment disobedience came—and God’s wisdom was removed—Adam lost the capacity to be surrounded by good, and he subsequently fell.

Now, because we’re all born with a tendency to sin due to the fallen condition of humanity in this world, no man is good. So, stop looking to be a good man. Become a healthy one instead.

God would impart into Adam healthy moral standards to govern his daily life. Eventually those standards would become the core substance for who he was. Daily, they would add to his character and strengthen the man he eventually would become. These are the same standards captured in the core values of a total man.

All we need is the discipline to follow God’s pattern. This book introduces the core values—Surrender, Order, Purpose, Boundaries, Responsibilities, Authority, and Love—in a way that’s easy to comprehend. These values are presented in the form of disciplines for the man to follow.

Today’s society is pushing back against the belief that you need to have character. But character is what distinguishes a total man from the rest. The character of an individual is what makes being a healthy man achievable. All other components hinge on his character. If your character is flawed, then this diminishes your individual uniqueness.

Character is established by a conscientious adherence to moral values, not by lofty rhetoric or good intentions. To admire someone’s character doesn’t require that the person be perfect; however, it does mean that we think of this person as worthy of our trust and admiration.

Character is defined as the aggregate of features and traits that form the individual nature of a person. Character is an account of the qualities or peculiarities of a person, especially with reference to behavior or personality—the way someone thinks, feels, and behaves.

Without a solid character, you cannot become a healthy man. The world would have us believe that being a man is all about the three P’s—provide, protect, procreate. There are men going into the world concentrating on being successful in their finances, being strong physically, and concentrating on having a beautiful family full of children. However, as they lean on this belief, their character is neglected, and their relationships are superficial and meaningless.

None of the three P’s focus on who you really are. It’s your character that emphasizes who you really are. The core values of a total man focus on building and reinforcing a man’s character, which leads him to a higher level of integrity.

"Good character is not formed in a week or a month.

It is created little by little, day by day.

Protracted and patient effort is needed

    to develop good character."

    (Heraclitus)

Let me remind you that being a man is hard work. Yes, it’s much easier to stand on the sidelines avoiding the challenges of life, than to be held accountable as a man. If you have chosen the easier route, understand that you may never find true joy nor your absolute purpose in life. Know that there’s no quick fix, just like trying to stay fit. Physical fitness is achieved by putting in the work. Likewise, you must put in the work to be a healthy man. The biggest hurdle you’ll face when you want to accomplish a physical fitness program is starting. The same is true in being a healthy man; half the battle is getting started. You must start right where you are and grow into the man God is calling you to be. If being a man is someone you aspire to become, then realize it will take some hard work.

    And the results are amazing.

"Being a man isn’t just something you say you are,

it’s someone you aspire to become"

Once you enter the gates to become a man of relevance, substance, and strength, that becomes your experience for the rest of your life—twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. It may be a struggle to get to the starting line, but knowing that you can do it motivates you to
