It was a rainy Christmas Eve.
The rain splashed noisily against the second-story window of the bedroom Anslee Cooper shared with her little sister, Hannah, who slept soundly in her bed across the room. The only light came from the flickering vanilla candle on Hannah’s nightstand. If Momma knew they’d left a candle lit all night, she’d have their hide.
