    Chapter 1: How the Chakras Function — Emotionally, Physically, and Mentally

    You may have heard about chakras before, but now is the opportunity to learn exactly what they are, how they function, and what to do when they are not working properly. Chakras refers to the energetic foci in the body. The Sanskrit word, cakra, is the root of Chakra and translates to mean disk or wheel. A traditional representation of the Chakras are spinning disks of energy in your body, emitting light from the movement. It is the movement of energy through these foci that maintains your body’s natural functions. They absorb energy, transmit it, and expel it according to what your body needs.

    You are probably familiar with your physical body. You understand your joints and muscles. You may even understand how your nerves work and how food and drinks affect your overall health. If you have an introductory understanding of your physical self, you already have an understanding of how the body is connected to itself. One action influence multiple parts of your body. In addition, your senses play a role in your life and body. For example, how you see or what you smell can influence your thoughts on a situation thereby altering your response to your environment. With this knowledge, you have a good foundation for the body’s connectivity.

    You do not only have a physical body, though. You have an energetic, vibrational frequency. Just like all things in the universe, you are made of energy. This is the basics of Quantum Physics and the study of your Chakras. The smallest part of an atom to the largest planet is made up of vibrating energy. Depending on the text and how you are studying it, the term energy can be presented as, life force, bioplasm, Odic force, mana, prana, chi, ki, or qi."

    Your physical self is confined to the boundaries of your body, but your energy is not contained within your finite self. Think of your energetic self or energetic body as a series of layers overlapping one another and extending beyond your body. It is like the overlapping and interconnectedness of your physical self. Your nerves are intertwined with your muscles, bones, etc. It has an independent, specific function, but the other layers of your body influence it. The collection of your energy layers is called your aura. Your Chakras, the energy centers of your body, engage with your overall aura and your physical self.

    This knowledge of an energetic self has been documented since 1500 BC. While referred to with different names, cultures like the Egyptians and Mayan have all described the energy in the body. Incans and the Chinese also reference an interlocked physical and energetic self, citing the energy centers as a mirror for the universal energy that exists in all things. While you may not have acknowledged or accepted that you had an energetic body until now, you were probably aware that you are more than just a physical, biological organism.
