About this ebook

The founder of the nineteenth century French school of Neo-Impressionism, Georges Seurat devised the technique of Pointillism, portraying the play of light with tiny brushstrokes of contrasting colours. A man of studious habits and a scientific mind, Seurat employed his original technique to create huge compositions with tiny, detached strokes of pure colour too small to be distinguished when looking at the entire work, though when viewed from a distance, shimmered with brilliance. In spite of his short life, he left behind him an incredible body of work that would have a lasting impact on the history of modern art. Delphi’s Masters of Art Series presents the world’s first digital e-Art books, allowing readers to explore the works of great artists in comprehensive detail. This volume presents Seurat’s complete paintings in beautiful detail, with concise introductions, hundreds of high quality images and the usual Delphi bonus material. (Version 1)

    Head of a Girl

The French post-Impressionist artist, Georges Seurat, famous for devising the painting technique Pointillism, was born on 2 December 1859 in Paris. His father, Antoine Chrysostome Seurat, hailed originally from Champagne, and was a former legal official, who had achieved wealth through speculating in property. Antoine was something of an eccentric, who spent much of his time separate from the family, collecting religious paintings. He lived alone in a small house in Le Raincy, which featured a private chapel, in which he liked to attend mass, accompanied with his gardener.  He visited his wife and children once a week at boulevard de Magenta, but was largely remote from his son’s childhood. Georges’ mother, Ernestine Faivre, was a Parisian of the lower middle class and thirteen years younger than her husband. Georges also had a brother and a sister, who were both older than him.

Seurat first studied art at the École Municipale de Sculpture et Dessin, near his family’s home, then run by the sculptor Justin Lequien. At first Seurat was not impressed with the recent innovations of the Impressionists, dedicating this time instead to endless drawings of noses and ears from lithographed models under the supervision of Lequien.  During this time he must have learnt an extraordinary degree of patience in his work, which would have helped much later in devising his Pointillism technique. In 1878 he moved on to the École des Beaux-Arts where he was taught by Henri Lehmann, following a conventional academic training, drawing from casts of antique sculpture and copying drawings by the Old Masters. His formal artistic training came to an end in November 1879, when he left the École des Beaux-Arts for a year of military service.

Following his time spent in Brest Military Academy, Seurat returned to Paris where he shared a studio with his close friend and fellow artist Edmond Aman-Jean (1858-1936), while also renting a small apartment at 16 rue de Chabrol. For the next two years, he worked at mastering the art of monochrome drawing, for which he demonstrated a natural aptitude. His first exhibited work, accepted by the Salon in 1883, was a Conté crayon drawing of Aman-Jean. He also enjoyed studying the works of Eugène Delacroix, making notes on the Romantic artist’s pioneering use of colour. By all accounts, Seurat was a shy and quiet young man, with a serious nature, naturally suited to sedulous study. Charles Angrand, a close friend in early days, later described him as an extremely withdrawn personality.

In the spring of 1879, Seurat attended the Impressionist exhibition in the Avenue de l’Opéra, where he was captivated by the work of Monet, Degas and Pissarro. He felt disillusioned by the lifeless academicism of his teachers, and so with his friends Aman-Jean and Ernest Laurent, he rented a studio in the Rue de l’Arbalète and set about developing an entirely new approach to art.

Produced in 1879, Head of a Young Girl reveals the influence of countless hours drawing lithographed models under the guidance of Lequien.  Having studied in great depth the classical statuary at the École des Beaux-Arts, drawing from plaster casts, Seurat was clearly interested in the statuesque quality of the model’s pose. The composition is likely a copy of a sketch by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867), the Neoclassical master; incidentally, Lehmann was a pupil of Ingres, so Seurat would
