About this ebook

Rutherford's activities in the lead up to Valentine's day should make great segments for Ellen Ramsey's local news channel. Jo Carey

Jo Carey grew up in the Midwest but her curiosity and gypsy-spirit has kept her on the move. She's lived in eight US states and spent three years living in Ireland. She has always loved creature movies, so creatures and bugs often show up in her books. Jo, a former information security compliance guru, writes fast-paced, character-driven stories in a variety of genres from medical thrillers to space operas and cozy mysteries. Her novels are filled with humor, romance, and sometimes creatures or aliens, or maybe even all of the above. She often builds her stories around a strong female lead character surrounded by plenty of hunky male heroes. Jo's been under fire on a golf course and climbed out the roof of an elevator in the Netherlands. Life hasn't been boring. Now residing in Texas, setting often plays a huge role in her stories. Jo was intrigued by the League of Planetary Systems, a world her husband, Frank, created for his science fiction books, and she now writes mysteries and other types of tales sets in that world. Jo was bitten by a cat, a fire ant, and a snake, before succumbing to the bite of the writing bug.

    Valentine's Terror - Jo Carey

    PROLOGUE

    Thanksgiving Weekend:

This is going to be epic, Billy said. I’m glad we decided to go hunting instead of sitting at home eating tv dinner turkey and dressing out of those little divided aluminum trays.

Yeah. Even if we don’t get a deer, at least we can eat unhealthy crap and drink as much beer as we want without anyone around to bitch about it.

Hank gave his cousin Freddy a high-five, the sound deadened by their gloves. Late that afternoon, the two hunters crested a small rise and stopped to look over the surrounding fields. They hoped to see some deer or at least tracks. Instead, they saw an untouched blanket of white snow. If I didn’t know better, I’d think the deer were hiding from us, Freddy said. Come out. Come out wherever you are.

I’m beat, Billy said. Let’s just set up camp and break out the beers.

It only took a few minutes to set up their small tent, and get a fire started. There was still a halo of light on the horizon when they sat down on a log with beers in hand.

This is boring, man, Freddy said. He checked the time on his phone and groaned. Shit. It’s not even dinner time yet.

Let’s grab the rifles and see if we can find anything, Billy said, tipping up his beer and chugging it down.

They put another log on the fire before ducking into the trees and making their way around to the other side of the meadow.

Come on, man. Let’s head back, Freddy said. It’s too dark to see anything now. They had only taken a few steps toward their campsite when a loud roar sounded off to their right. What the hell?

    Bear, Billy said.

No. Bears are hibernating. They continued walking but picked up their pace. The glow from their fire was in sight when Billy held up a hand to stop Freddy. He pointed to his right before cupping his hand around his ear.

Before either of them could move, a large creature ran out of the trees and knocked Freddy to the ground. Billy fired three shots. Two of them hit the creature. It turned its attention to Billy and attacked.

Freddy wrapped one arm around his stomach trying to hold himself together. With his other hand, he felt around until he locked his fingers around the barrel of his rifle. He pulled it to him and pointed it at the creature that was standing over Freddy. The creature that stared back at him was something he’d only ever seen in movies. The one long, curved tooth he could see was dripping blood onto the white snow. Freddy would never know if his bullets hit their mark or not.

    CHAPTER ONE

How are you planning to make this exciting, El? Amelia said. I know you're a creative genius, but I'm pretty sure this stuff was boring 100 years ago. Who wants to look at the diary of some woman who died a century ago.

It's history. Some people believe the past dictates where we are today, El said. She was a mail order bride. She came here to marry a man she'd never seen before and build a life here.

What's the angle for this? Amelia asked.

Our illustrious mayor is hoping to lift the spirits of Rutherford by showing the town that we've faced adversity before and survived.

I can't believe more than 100 years later Rutherford still has the same problem—not enough women.

And yet, we're still single, El laughed. Let's get some shots of the diorama to finish up.

After they finished at the courthouse, Amelia and El stopped at the Lariat Bistro for lunch. Hello ladies, Raelynn said. Drinks, dessert, or lunch?

Do we have to pick just one? El asked with a chuckle.

I'll be right back with your drinks, Rae said. I've got juicy news to share. She dropped off a check at another table and reappeared at their table a few minutes later with an iced tea and a water. Do you know what you want for lunch?

Is your news lunch-skipping worthy? Amelia asked.

No need. We're three gorgeous, single, women. We can have it all. She took their orders and promised she'd have time to talk when she brought their food.

The girls speculated on what Raelynn's news could be. Rutherford's rumor mill rivaled that of any small town. This week there were two hot topics—would Jaxon Blalock propose to Liza Harlan before Valentine's Day or would he be one of the bachelors auctioning off his baked goods in hopes of winning a date for the Valentine’s Day dance. The other topic that had everyone buzzing was the expected arrival of the new vet that would be taking over Doc Siler's practice.

A couple of women stopped by their table to chat about the upcoming events. It seemed all of Rutherford was caught up in the spirit of the upcoming Valentine holiday.

Earth to El, Amelia said. Where were you?

Oh. Sorry Amelia. I was just thinking that it's us girl's that are in short supply here and yet it feels like we're the ones hoping one of the guys will choose us not the other way around.

Raelynn appeared and slid a gourmet grilled cheese sandwich and sweet potatoes fries in front of each of them. I think that's because we know all of these guys. If any of them were worth dating, we've already been there done that. I'll be right back. She grabbed the coffee pot and made the rounds to refill mugs, before sliding into the booth beside Ellen. That's where my news comes in.

Ellen grinned. It always amazed her how Raelynn could resume a conversation like someone had put it on pause. Rae could always pick right up where she left off. It wasn't always as easy for her friends to get back on the same page. OK. Give. What's this amazing news of yours? El asked.

The new vet got into town yesterday.

Have you seen him yet? How old is he? Amelia asked. Is he single?

Whoa there, girl, Rae said. "I haven't met him yet, but I know he's single because the mayor already got him
