Summary Guide - The Mindset Warrior
Introduction
In this Mindset Warrior Summary Guide, we cover the main topics discussed in The Body: A Guide for Occupants
. This book is intended to supplement your reading and be an easy reference guide. You are encouraged to purchase the original book if you have not already.
The difference between this guide and the actual book, is that we don't go into the lengthy stories and repetition that most books often do. Instead, we share all the intriguing facts about the human body, and pair it with things you can do to build and maintain resilient health.
As I always say, the original books are great to read because they provide a lot of examples. This repetition can help to embed the lessons into your psyche. That being said, stripping these lessons down to there core will help you to focus on the things that really matter. As I'm sure we can agree, time is very valuable. I am all about maximizing time.

Setting The Stage
The Body: A Guide for Occupants
is as an entertaining walkthrough of the human body, and how our environment affects it. The author, Bill Bryson, is not a medical doctor or scientist, but he acts as a journalist, gathering the pieces of data known about our existence, then ordering them accordingly.
Inside the book, and inside this summary, you'll not only learn the straightforward
properties of the body, like how many bones there are in the average body, but you'll also learn things like, why we evolved to have a certain bone, and what purpose it serves.
There are 23 chapters total.
Each chapter covers a part, system, or function of the body. Bryson also disease disease: What causes it? And what can be done to prevent it?
Overall, you'll walk away having a richer understanding of the body and the world you inhabit.
Chapter 1 – Building A Human
Chapter 1 begins by making the case that we don't know very much about the bodies we inhabit.
Bryson lays out the following facts:
- You blink over 14,000 times a day. In total, your eyes are closed for 23 minutes per wake time without you having to think about it.
- Your body produces about 2 million red blood cells per second. Each blood cell circulates about 150,000 before it's recycled.
- Your body is comprised of 7 octillion atoms.
- When stretched, your lungs would cover half a tennis court.
- The length of all your blood vessels would cover two and half orbits around the earth.
- It takes 20 billion strands of DNA together to equate to the width of a thin strand of human hair.
The Cell
Cells can be thought of as a container; they are the basic units of life. They contain ribosomes, proteins, DNA, RNA, mitochondria, and more. The nucleus powers the cell; it holds the cells DNA (about 3 feet).
DNA
DNA has two strands that are connected like a ladder. DNA are divided into tightly coiled sections known as chromosomes, and shorter units called genes. All your genes together are called your genome. It's primary goal is to keep itself alive and replicate.
DNA is extremely durable and efficient. It can last for thousands of years, and only makes about one error per every billion letters copied. Since our cells divide at a rapid pace, there are about three errors (i.e. mutations) per cell
