    Chapter 1

My name is Robert Florence and my wife is Maryann Florence and this is the story of our long journey to painlessly losing 199 pounds (to date) and keeping it off while we are still eating all the things we love guilt free! We have included our actual weight chart to show how our journey has progressed.

Hi, this is Maryann and I am writing this book with Robert. We had different experiences so I’ll be chiming in with another point of view occasionally. Look for the MA heading… that’s me.

Oh my god, another diet book. Well, let’s talk about that for a moment. This is NOT a diet book; this is a book to show you how Maryann and I learned to manage the food we eat and not let it manage US for the rest of our lives! We know that if you retrain your brain to understand what a proper portion is and what the calories involved are, you CAN change your food behavior and gain control of your weight. I know you have heard it all before but I am confident that this is the last diet/lifestyle book you will ever need to read. There are no gimmicks; it is just pure science. There is no additional expense and no special food to buy. You eat what you always eat. The whole program is in your hands. This book is about how we developed a plan that taught us to manage portion size, calories and exercise without giving up any of the foods we love or experiencing any guilt about what we ate. It is a lifelong plan to get the excess weight off and keep it off while enjoying all the foods we love. It is not about a lifetime of sacrifice and giving up all the foods we love. It sounds impossible but I assure you it is not. I have included the actual weight chart we kept during our journey so you can see our weekly progress as we lost the weight.

So, why are we not promoting a ‘healthy’ diet right from the start of the plan? We are not here to tell anyone what they should do. Everyone already knows they should be eating healthier and exercising and if we did what was good for us, we wouldn’t be in this position.

We have lost control of our food. From restaurant portions to convenience store soda sizes, it seems that everyone is in a ‘whose is bigger’ competition. To maximize dollar value we went to the restaurants that gave us more food for our money. Then other restaurants started increasing their portions to compete. And suddenly the portions that are fit for a very physically active person is the same portion given to everyone. Then everyone got on the train from the clubs that sell enough food in one package for 50 people to the sizes of clothes that changed over time to accommodate a larger population and make us feel that we haven’t gained as much as we have. My husband is currently in a size S t-shirt now and he couldn’t even fit into a small in high school. This is a great example of size creep.

Manufacturers also create misleading portion sizes by making packages that look like ‘single servings’ but are actually meant for 2-3 servings. That takes away our control over how much we eat because when opening a ‘single serve’ bag of chips who would throw away the last few?

Given all that, it’s no wonder that almost no one has any clue to proper portions anymore. Previous generations grew up with smaller sized portions but those who came after would never know that portions today are ginormous but haven’t always been that way. So going directly from outsized portions to eating healthy is no longer realistic and is very hard to sustain. This program looks at how we actually eat not how we should eat, and works with our normal eating patterns. It will help reduce our portions slowly so that we can lose without depriving ourselves. Once we feel better about ourselves and our bodies, the exercise and healthy eating can follow. If only because they’ll make us feel even better!

When I think about what a diet is I realize that the very word diet is defeating in itself. You are starting with the assumption that you will eat less for a certain period of time, lose weight and then when you are done you can stop dieting and move on. Sorry, that is NOT how it really works. You have to take the time to retrain your brain to listen to your stomach when it tells you it is full, learn to handle food correctly and then eat properly for the rest of your life.

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in business which DOESN’T qualify me in the slightest as an expert in diet, nutrition or exercise, but it does mean I should be smart enough to figure this out. We are just like you. We are surrounded by food all the time and we have to figure out a way to deal with it. Food is the love and the bane of my life. Unfortunately eating isn’t the same as quitting smoking or quitting some other bad habit; you HAVE to eat to survive. We have yoyo dieted many times and ultimately failed each time. We wanted to find a way to do this and make it as easy and failure proof as possible without giving up the food we always eat and love. This is the story of our journey and how we worked through finding a way to lose weight and keep it off in a lifelong sustainable way.

I have struggled most of my life with food and being overweight. I know how difficult it is to control portions when you are surrounded by food. And I know how difficult it is to try to change ingrained behaviors and eating patterns. I’ve joked about calling our plan the Slackers Guide to weight loss because I wanted to change my eating habits as little as possible. I had tried some different weight loss programs in the past. They worked for a bit but I didn’t really learn anything from those diets. All I learned was what they thought a portion should be not what portion was right for me. I finally figured out that I didn’t have to shrink my stomach so much as I had to shrink my eyes. I couldn’t have anyone else telling me what a portion was. I had to learn what my body needed for it to
