Overcoming Burn-Out - Rolando José Olivo

The extreme exhaustion or burn-out is originated mainly by the demands and multiple needs of the postmodern western lifestyle. Its definition is broad, complex and diffuse. It constitutes a state that develops progressively with high levels of stress. In this case, the person assumes too many obligations, losing the perspectives on his limitations and as more complications arise, he tries to be more productive, expecting for the eventual recognition of the society.

The burn-out has two phases, in the first one huge efforts prevail to achieve various personal and professional goals, which intensify more and more, while in the second, decay, apathy, discomfort, lack of motivation and some degree of frustration prevail.

Although dissatisfaction and inability to respond to the needs originate this phenomenon (human well-being is insatiable), there are other factors that contribute to it.

In addition, in the long-term the consequences of extreme exhaustion are: chronic fatigue, inefficiency, deterioration in performance, lack of motivation, denial of certain facts and addictions such as alcoholism. There may come a time when the person is physically and mentally unable to perform its duties.

The purpose of this literary work is to give an overview of the burn-out syndrome and the ways to face and overcome it. For this purpose, considering that the extreme exhaustion depends on the complex human nature, this book is divided into the following main chapters:

    II. Burn-Out.

While the Chapter III. Resilience includes these parts: a) III.1 The Conception of Resilience (What is resilience?), and b) III.2 Burn-Out vs. Resilience (What is the relationship between burn-out and resilience?).

The term resilience comes from physics. Usually, a resilient person has suffered considerably and instead of surrendering to depression, frustration or helplessness, he recovers emotionally and overcomes adversities.

Throughout history, there have been prominent cases of resilience: Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein, Viktor Frankl and Nelson Mandela.

However, why are not all human beings resilient?

In this regard, facing with unfavorable circumstances, the human being falls into anguish, depression or frustration and like motivation, resilience manifests in a very particular and selective way in each one. If the degree of depression is high and frustration persists, it is difficult
