    Chapter 1

    It takes every bit of concentration I have to hold my focus on the illusion I’m shaping. The shifts of color and light play between my fingers, violet flames with a glow that’s more vibrant than the brightly-painted signs adorning the stalls lining the main market square hosting the Tristram Clan’s Summer Solstice festival. It’s a simple spell, one that shouldn’t feel as difficult as it does, but even after  weeks  straining to master it, the reflected glow in Abeni’s eyes makes it seem new .

    She leans close, passing her hands through the cold flame. Those full lips stretch into a wicked grin. "See, I told you you’d get it. You aren’t as clueless at these charms as your mom says…do you ever get the sense that she wants you to be clueless, because then you have an excuse to stay close to home, and Reza’s the only one she needs to worry about training? You ever get the feeling she needs one of you to stay small, so she doesn’t have to give up both her boys to the big, bad world? I think she’s resigned herself to Reza leaving the pack…but you, too?"

    She has the kind of smile a guy could bask in like a summer afternoon: wide and glowing, lighting up her face in the colors of the sunset. Her bronzed cheeks glow when I lean in. Does she know? she asks with a conspiratorial glance at the center of the square, where my mother and my uncle are talking over a pint.

    I shake my head. "No. I wanted to be sure I had the hang of it before I showed her."

    Probably for the best, she says, looking away.

    "Besides, she’s not that bad. She just knows that I’m not as strong as a full-blooded anguis would be. Even Reza is better at spellcasting than me. I’m just
