    About the Author

Unlike most brilliant ideas that come to men while in the bathroom, this one didn’t come to Colonel MacIntosh Howe when he stood in the bushes at the edge of camp relieving himself. It was right after that, in the frenzied rush of panic when he tried to zip up his fly as he fled the rain of bullets cascading from the pre-dawn darkness.

Besides running for his life, all he could think about was his wife Christine, likely headed out for drinks with the staff from Royal St. Anne’s Hospital. That prick Anders would probably sit across from her and stare at her cleavage. She wasn’t shy. Maybe she’d actually sleep with him this time. And why not? Like her, the prick saved lives. Her husband was a professional at taking them.

He opened the cockpit door of the experimental McDonnell-Douglas HV7-AB and shut it behind him as the enemy’s rounds—even the armor-piercing variety—clanged impotently against the fuselage. He flipped a few switches above his head and the mag-converters fired with a deep thrum of power, the console erupting to life with the blue-green glow of iridescent light. Amid the peppering of ammunition there were frantic knocks from the knuckles of dying men, trying to escape as he was.

But escape was not his plan.

That is to say it wasn’t the entirety of his plan. The British government would count dearly the loss of the craft; it was the lynchpin to His Majesty’s burgeoning Department of Special Warfare inside the Ministry of Defense. It was his duty to protect the vehicle at all costs, even his own life.

But Howe did not relish the idea of scuttling the thing and leaving the wreckage to be picked over by the Persians. He relished even less the thought of detonating the onboard tactical nuke. Though the Ministry felt it was the surest way to eliminate all evidence of the craft’s existence, it wasn’t the way he wanted to write his epitaph.

Besides, the Seven had yet to be tested in combat. This was her maiden combat excursion. This was as good a combat test as any.

He donned the pilot’s helmet and activated the visor, going from darkness to brilliant amber hues in a flash. Targeting solutions popped up in the form of tiny squares connected by concentric lines. The gun mounts whined as the hydraulics tracked the various barrels left and right.

He tapped his fingers against the controls impatiently as the mag-converters still showed only seventy percent. The craft was surrounded by concrete barriers, weapons crates and personnel shelters. Opening fire now would decimate the camp and possibly cost lives. He’d make a note for the developers: mag-converter warm-up sequence speed sub-optimal.

A hiss of air preceded an explosion to his left that rocked the craft and temporarily blinded him through the infrared visor. He mentally recorded another note: infrared flash filter sub-optimal. His subconscious knew a shoulder rocket
