About this ebook
The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force Academy is the initial police training institution of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force.
Persons who attain the Force's entry requirements are expected to undergo a six months initial or recruit training program at the institution. The program is intended to convert "raw civilians" from diverse backgrounds and socialisation among other factors into the culture of the police force. Discipline is paramount as a concerted effort is made during the training period to graduate well – behaved police officers.
Regardless of the well intentioned efforts of the initial training program conducted at the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force Academy, the recruits who graduate as fully fledged members of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force show occasional glimpses of their earlier socialization. This is reflected on a daily basis by reports of police officers involved in wrong doings. Police officers are suspended and dismissed on a regular basis for various infractions. There are numerous complaints by members of the public of infelicities and outright criminal behavior committed by members of the force. Conversely, there are a considerable number of police officers who went through the initial training program and whose behaviors are exemplary. Those officers are considered fine examples of policing and they are engaged on a daily basis in the force's efforts at engendering peace and tranquility in Saint Lucia.
This publication reviews the initial training program conducted at the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force Academy to determine various aspects of the training which are relevant to behavior.
It also makes an objective assessment of the ability of the program as constituted to influence the behavior of members of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force and evaluates various factors in the social environment which impact on the behavior of police officers.
