About the Book
This highly recommended book, ‘You and Your Mobile Home’, is a fascinating insight into the dynamics of health and happiness through belief and emotion. Malcolm S. Southwood has, after almost 40 years of practical and spiritual experience, managed to find a balance between spiritual insight and medical fact. As a professional spiritual-healing therapist, Southwood has been able to see through the dogma and self-interests of both the spiritual and medical worlds. This book is full of practical examples and exercises which, in some deep part of our soul, we can all associate with and which will help us to understand ourselves and our problems at a practical level.
This exciting insight of the human experience should be read and considered by all levels of society—the scientist, the religious and the layperson—so they can begin to see both themselves and others with understanding and empathy.

Introduction
This is a story about a child, an adult and their mobile home. Both the adult and the child experience life together, through its good times and its difficult times. Sometimes they live carelessly and forget to maintain their home, causing it damage needing repair, especially as the home gets older. Sometimes the damage is serious and they ask for help, and when the mobile home is no longer road-worthy, they abandon it.
Oh, I forgot to say: The mobile home is you!
Let us begin at the point where a mother’s instinctive life-force decides it’s time for you to leave your watery bed and begin an independent existence. As long as you don’t think you’re going to be totally independent, all will be fine. Birth is your first trauma, and what a trauma it is. Even before you have taken your first breath, you are in a life or death situation. If your mother is having a difficult day, I’m sure your day is not going to be all sunshine and roses, and the type of entry you are making onto this planet will affect you physically and emotionally, perhaps through until the end of your life. The birth process itself is not driven by emotion but more by instinct, which is memory developed over millions of years, and with the memory comes a complex set of instructions which are intended to take you from the beginning of your journey through to its end. This is not going to be an easy experience; you will be fighting to do things your own way and to fulfil the many and varied tasks you have been instructed to complete before the journey’s end. Your parents and others are going to do everything they can to suppress your better judgement, believing they alone know what is best for your life, irrespective of the fact that they haven’t seen the travel plans or know what it is you are expected to accomplish.
But back to the birth, something is definitely changing. What happens in the next few hours, will determine how your life unfurls. This does not feel good; everything around you is shrinking, getting tighter, forcing your little body in one direction—out. You are thinking, I mustn’t breathe until I’m out, everything is too tight, give me some space. I must get away from here. This really doesn’t feel good, get me out of here. Did I really agree to this? You start to kick and struggle to force your way out of this plastic-type housing and into freedom and space.
This whole procedure is as instinctive as a chicken slowly pecking itself out of its shell and knowing what it has to do when it’s finally pecked its way to freedom. While this physical struggle for life is taking place, the soul finally decides to join the party. This is the process of harmonisation between the soul and your physical self, your mobile home. One final push… Ufff, and you are free. Now life can begin, and the battles can start, have fun. The alternative? Don’t even think about it.
Part 1 Birth and Its Consequences
A New Beginning
It’s a surprise for most people to realise that it is only during birth that the essence of the spirit, the soul, connects with the baby. To do so earlier would have made it difficult to escape had something gone wrong during the pregnancy. This whole procedure of birth usually requires around seven hours. At the end of the seven hours, baby will have experienced the struggle to leave mother and, with the soul safely on board, will have become an independent life-force. Baby has made a successful entry into physical life and the mother will have experienced an exhausting feeling of release. Baby is now free to live its emotions, and both mother and baby will be enveloped in an aura of emotional love, though the baby will have the extra protection of spiritual love, which to those who can see this energy, appears like millions of tiny lights radiating from the baby’s body. This is a protective aura, and nothing should be done to damage this radiated protective shield. It is there to resist entry to the emotional energy of the adults around it. This shield, if undisturbed, will last for several weeks and give the child time to become one with its emotional energy and survival instincts. The greatest danger to this protective shield is shock. Unthinking adults who think it funny to make the baby jump by shouting at it or tickling it or any other action which would cause shock in its little delicate body, unintentionally destroy many of the tiny strands of light, causing the baby to be unprotected against all external energies which are not of love. It is this special love which exists between a mother and her baby which ensures the continued physical and emotional bond which has been growing between them for nine months. This is how a birth should proceed. But what if something interferes with this natural and instinctive drive?
Let us consider a different birth, one that’s all too common in our materialistic world. Baby is fully primed to push and struggle; mother is emotionally energised to release her baby to the world and then, someone is coming through the roof, baby is extracted from its warm and comfy world without any effort. No need to push, no need to hold the breath, no need to fight for space, it’s all finished and over. Or is it? All that birth energy, all that instinctive drive to be free, all the emotional preparations, they are still there, they haven’t disappeared, and they can’t be washed off. And what about the soul’s need to climb on board during the struggle of birth?
The instinct energies of birth can only be removed through the activities of birth or the triggers that stimulate a birth response. And because the process of birth was interrupted or very fast, the process of birth has not been completed, the mother and her baby are still energetically connected, they are still held in the instinctive drive to separate. And what of the soul? It wasn’t given time to complete the harmonisation programme and become one with the body which is going to be its home for its planned lifetime. Harmonising with physical and emotional energies is a complex procedure, it takes time for the soul, through the special spiritual energies present during birth, to make connection possible.
Because of the interrupted or fast birth, the soul only has a loose connection to the body which was to be its home. Mother too, is going to have problems which we will discuss later. Let’s begin by looking at people whose births didn’t follow the normal rules of entry into life and see what effect it has on their lives.
Fast Births
Some of the symptoms listed here can also be attributed to a long or traumatic birth, the symptoms seen together make it easy to distinguish between a fast birth and a traumatic birth. Fast birth refers to anything which is less than five hours, though there are no hard and fast rules about how long a birth should take. What is important is that a birth should be allowed to proceed uninterrupted, unless there is risk to baby or mother. Baby needs time to utilise all the instinctive energy of birth while it is pushing itself into freedom. If it doesn’t have time to do this, the unused instinct will irritate its future life in a number of ways. Of course, the fastest of all births is caesarean. If the baby had been struggling to be born before the caesarean operation, the birth-instinct energy should have dissipated. It is caesarean births before the baby is ready to begin its journey into life, and which are more for the convenience of the hospital than the mother or baby, that we are concerned with here. As the child grows and becomes an adult, the unused birth instinct is going to show itself in a number of disturbing ways. When an instinctive urge isn’t satisfied, it will irritate the emotions until something is done to remove it. Thousands of people across the world suffer emotionally and physically because of problems associated with a fast birth. In the past, when large families were common and births were often fast, babies were tightly wrapped in swaddling clothes to calm them. Binding a restless baby in cloth allowed it to struggle against the cloth and burn up the unused birth energy. Below I have listed some of the symptoms and problems associated with fast births. They are not in any particular order, and not all fast births will have all the symptoms listed or suffer from the same symptoms. It depends upon how much of the birth energy was used in the process of being born, but if one symptom exists for which there is no obvious answer, it is worth asking the patient if they have any of the following symptoms. Poor diagnosis, because of insufficient information, often results in the wrong medication or treatment which can cause problems which previously didn’t exist.
Night-time Asthma and Other Breathing Problems
Wrapped-up, nice and warm, and asleep in the darkness is very much like a pre-birth situation to the emotional subconscious, which believes itself to still be inside mother, and, therefore, baby shouldn’t be breathing. The unused instinct of birth is activated, breathing slows, and baby, or later as an adult, becomes restless and struggles for breath with what appear to be symptoms of asthma or shallow breathing. Restlessness during the night is often a problem for babies and adults who were born too quickly. The problems sometimes pass at puberty, after which the subconscious goes deeper and the birth instinct is less powerful until it is triggered later in life by a situation which reminds the subconscious of its own birth, such as scuba diving.
Neck Pain or Headaches
When baby is about to begin its journey into life, the muscles in the neck tighten, holding the baby’s head in the stiff position as it begins to force itself through the opening to life. This is to ensure that the baby’s head does not move out of position during birth. Babies who have not used all their birth instinct will often arch their back and neck when they are held. Pain across the shoulders or the neck are sometimes a problem for people who work in small offices. Feeling trapped in an office is enough to trigger a birth energy causing tightness in the neck and shoulders, and sometimes a subconscious feeling of wanting to get out or get away.
Inner Restlessness and Restless Legs
This is a typical fast-birth symptom. It is the birth-instinct energy irritating the nerves to extract itself from what it considers is a trapped situation. Often a problem at night, in the dark, warm and wrapped-up in bed, which is very much like being back in mother and which stimulates the unused birth instinct into action, as will any feelings of being emotionally or physically trapped. The symptoms become worse the older we get. As we age, our energy levels are not strong enough to resist any lingering birth energy. Restlessness and restless legs, especially during the night, can often be associated with a fast birth.
Phobias: Tunnels, Small Spaces, Heights
Phobia’s associated with small spaces are obvious. The problem is not often serious enough to be called a phobia, but driving through tunnels can be uncomfortable and lying down in an MRI cabinet, which resembles the birth canal, can bring on feeling of panic—a need to get out. The birth instinct has activated the subconscious to the dangers of suffocation. Heights can also be a problem, being born means falling headfirst and the sensation of being drawn to the edge of anything is often the cause of the birth energy trying to evict you from where you are. It’s a weird feeling to feel yourself being instinctively pulled to the edge of something. Children born fast will often fall into water or holes head first, or struggle to get out of their mother’s arms.
Relationship Problems
The feeling or need to move away from a relationship if it becomes too close or intimate can be a serious problem. I have had more patients than it’s possible to recall who have been unable to stay in a relationship once it begins getting close and intimate. It’s usually associated with being hugged or held. This is a typical example of a birth instinct being activated by being held tight and creating a need to get away from a loved one. Many people don’t like to be held or hugged, and children who have had a quick birth will fight and struggle to be free. People think that it’s just a personality problem but it’s more than this, and though it seems that they don’t like being held, this is exactly what they want or need. Held firmly, but gently, allows the infant to struggle free, slipping head first out of a parent’s arms from head to feet will often dissolve the birth instinct. I would suggest repeating the exercise until the child tires of the game. It is essential that the process is treated as a game or the child will feel guilty that it has done something wrong and resist your efforts to help it.
A word of warning if you are helping adults: Anyone who, when being held from behind, pulls down rather than going up and through the arms, are displaying fear usually because of a childhood trauma. This is not a reaction to birth instinct and they should be released immediately.
The instinctive drive to get away can also show itself in being unable to stay in a job, an unreasonable need to leave, to get away from something. It’s a constant and unsatisfied need to move away. Some children, as soon as they are old enough, will move as far away from their parents as they can. For no apparent reason, they leave home, run away, but once they arrive in their far away destination, they don’t know what to do, there is a yearning to return. The power of undissolved birth instinct is incredible and, like all instinctive drives, is very difficult to understand or correct.
Need for Movement
Children born too quickly, especially by caesarean section, will have a subconscious need to be outside. Feeling trapped inside can bring on unexplained feelings of panic. These children will be unable to sit still, always wanting to move, running through doors, jumping out of windows, climbing through tunnels. They lack concentration and can be aggressive if confined in any way with a tendency to be restless, especially in bed. These symptoms grouped together are sometimes wrongly diagnosed as ADHD or hyperactive syndrome. Drugs such as Ritalin to suppress the symptoms are definitely not the way to treat the cause of an internal irritation to keep moving. Giving children something to push against, making a game of letting them force their way through the arms of the parent, as described above, is often a quick and easy way to solve the worst of the symptoms. When the symptoms are looked at from the point of unused birth instinct, it’s easy to understand why they have a problem. These distressing symptoms are usually less severe in the adult when, after puberty, the instinctive drives go deeper into the subconscious; but as we have seen, the symptoms still persist, such as a need to sleep with an open window or door, a need to know where the air is coming from, generally preferring to be outside, a dislike of being held, etc.
Food Allergies
If the birth was exceptionally fast, the subconscious will not have experienced an act of coming into life and the instincts that trigger digestion might not have been activated. The baby will then be unable to digest milk and might develop a lactose intolerance. As the child gets older, it might develop an intolerance to natural foods such as nuts and cereal products which, in trying to reject them, becomes an allergy. Treating the symptoms as a phobia is sometimes sufficient to overcome the problem.
Fear of Dying
This has nothing to do with birth instinct. As I explained earlier, the spirit, because of the fast birth, has not been able to finish connecting to the physical and emotional energies of the baby. The purpose behind this procedure is fully explained in my earlier book, Where the Soul Flies. The spirit has been close to the baby from the beginning of the pregnancy but does not become totally one with it until the last minutes of birth. This is just a precaution in case something goes wrong and it needs to leave the situation in a hurry. It is during birth that full harmonisation takes place. Being born into this world means leaving, dying, from the place it is coming from, to arrive here. This feeling of dying often persists if harmonisation was not completed, but it is rarely understood for what it is, which is leaving one level of awareness to enter into another.
Not Grounded, Poor Concentration
A spirit who has not had time to fully connect with its body will have many problems. Some of the physical difficulties I have already listed but others are not so obvious. There is the sensation of not feeling in touch with one’s own body. The sensation of somehow being distant from reality, it’s a sensation or awareness that becomes more obvious in quieter moments, such as relaxing or meditating. Children who have not completely harmonised with their body tend to be clumsy and are often shouted at for knocking over small items, breaking things around the house,
