The Milward Chronicles Series

He is the last of the wizards. Milward survived the Magik Wars by the narrowest of margins. Just beginning his life among the magik users, his teacher was blasted into nonexistence by Gilgafed the Sorcerer during the fighting and he had to learn about this power on his own. As history has it, he became friendly with the enigmatic race of dragons, gigantic creatures able to smell magik, and, according to myth, once sailed the stars. Befriended by Labad, the last great Emperor, Milward became the one to watch over the royal household until Labad's prophecy is fulfilled. Heroes become legend. Legend becomes myth and empires decay as most men fail in their oaths. Sorcerers never forgive. Adam and Charity are about to find themselves in the middle of events that will shake the foundations of the empire. Moreover, if Labad's prophesy is right, the twins are the only ones with the power to save the world from annihilation. Milward has read the prophecy, he thinks. He has a copy, but the original has been lost for over a thousand years. That remains hidden with the dwarves, a people who would not share a secret if their lives depended on it—and it does. The original is given to the twins, along with Labad's weapons, and, though they don't know it yet, his abilities. Gilgafed is aware of this. It was partly due to his machinations that the empire crumbled. He plans to complete that destruction at all costs. The twins have to live if the empire is to survive. The barrier between this world and the shadow is beginning to thin, and Adam and Charity must face all the terrors the Sorcerer can bring to bear while Milward is forbidden to interfere.

Dragons were said to once rule the world, but in ages past the powerful creatures retreated to their mountain fastness to leave the younger races to their own devices. Then the magik war came and the dragons were forced to intervene to prevent the world's destruction. They succeeded but an emperor died and an empire began to slowly collapse into decay. Rifts in the fabric of reality were formed in the cataclysmic violence of that war--rifts that magik could penetrate if the wielder were either arrogant enough…or insane. With the barrier between the world of men and shadow rapidly thinning, Adam and Charity have been separated by an unnecessary war. Believing her brother has been slain, Charity begins to seek her own way in the world and finds two very unusual friends.  Adam, torn by grief, seeks out the wizard Milward. Together, the two begin their search for Charity...and Adam begins his apprenticeship at a time when magik and sorcery are in vehement conflict.

War is in the wind. Twins and the last scions of the House of Labad, Charity, and Adam--each unaware that the other is alive--face the oncoming strife filling the land on opposite sides of the conflict. The wizard Milward, parted from Adam during an angry row yet continues to do his best to guide the siblings unawares as the wall between the worlds weakens. Adam has become the officer of the guard under the son of the mad Duke of the city-state Grisham and joins the army as they begin fighting the soldiers from the south. Charity, with her companions Flynn and Neely, joins the Southern army, befriends the strange half-elf lad Circumstance, and marches upon the city of Grisham. After saving the world from the magik war in ages past, the dragons of Dragonglade are ever vigilant though reluctant to involve themselves in the affairs of younger races. Shealauch, a young dragon, has had a discouraging meeting with men. As a result, his tough hide has been pierced with arrows, and many of the dragons believe they must withdraw altogether from the world of men. While the wall between the worlds weakens, the sorcerer Gilgafed watches as the creature he created and infused with all the power of hell works its way north toward his own citadel in the mountain called Pestilence. With the southern empire marching to war against the Northern Kingdom, can the twins survive to fulfill the prophecy?

In a fit of desperate arrogance, Gilgafed the Sorcerer opens a rift between the worlds and releases a horror of old, a Seeker. Combined with the soul of a thief named McCabe, the creation becomes the one prophecies call The Destroyer. Aware now of his mistake and regretting his impulsive action, Gilgafed knows he must seek help to rid the world of this monstrous evil,  but the only one capable of aiding him is his ancient enemy, Milward, last of the Wizards. Milward has his hands full with the conflicts raging through the Southern Empire. Charity and Adam, twin scions of the ancient House of Labad, have been reunited after being separated for years. They and their companions attempt to capture Bilardi, the mad Duke of Grisham, in order to stop a war that could decimate the countryside. Duke Bilardi, on the other hand, has become seduced by the same dark sorcery that has kept Mallien, Magister of the Grisham Church, in power. With the rift weakening and ancient prophecies coming to fruition, Milward, the companions, and Gilgafed are forced to combine forces to survive--if they can keep from killing each other in the process.

When the world was new, magik was shared and used for the benefit of all, but there was one who felt she was above all others and should wield power alone. Centuries passed and powers greater than hers rose in the east, so the witch drew back into the shadows. The small minds of greedy men are easy to control, especially to one who has the ability to grant a small amount of power. Into this changing landscape, Adam and Charity have hoped they would be able to begin the new chapters in their lives. The Witch of Angbar, and fate have other things in mind.
